Michigan Family Now in Israel

HAIFA — Three years
ago John Pollachek was a
prosperous businessman
with a chain of fabric
stores extending from his
hometown in Jackson ac-
ross the rest of central
Michigan. , He and his
wife, • Jackie, were
"known, successful and
had everything we
needed." Then, suddenly,
they decided to sell ev-
erything and move to Is-
rael with their two chil-
dren.
"Our decision was the
culmination of 16 years in
Jackson, a small town
with a Jewish population
of 80," explains Jackie.
Our interest in Israel
began to grow and in
1968, the first year we had
enough money to travel
abroad, we visited Israel.
From that point on we
knew we would come back
here to live."
After a quick trip in
1971 (their fourth in four
years) to buy an apart-
ment, a car and
appliances, the Pol-
lacheks arrived by boat in
July of 1972. At a party
several months later, Pol-
lachek heard about an
opening at Elbit, a lead-
ing Israeli computer firm
run along Western lines.
"I became an expeditor,
in charge of improving the
flow of materials. The .de-
partment which I head in
conjunction with an Is-
raeli, was created to stop
inefficiency and waste on
the production site. I think
I've been influential. For
the first time recently, the
company kept to a produc-
tion schedule."

The adjustment to Is-
rael was easy for Pol-
lachek, Jackie and also for
Danny, their youngest
g
child, who had gradua ted
from high school the
month before the family
immigrated. Within half a
year, after learning Heb-
rew, he had joined the
Army and was serving in
the Sinai.
"We asked our kids to
give Israel one year be-
fore making any deci-
sions," explains Pol-
lachek. "After her first
year at the Hebrew Uni-
versity, Linda told us she
wanted to finish her edu-
cation in the States. She
was packed and ready to
go when the Yom Kippur
War broke out. After that
she felt she couldn't go
back."
"I'm happy with my
view of Haifa Bay, the
climate, and surround-
ings,". says Pollachek.
"We have lots of good
friends and a happy social
life. Here, my life is what
I've always wanted it to
be. I just never knew be-
fore that it was possible."

Retraction Printed
for Rabbi Belton

NEW YORK — "Hirado,"
a magazine published by the
Federation of Hungarian
Jews in Great Britain, has
printed a full retraction for
allegations made in its
March 1976 issue about
Rabbi Albert B. Belton of
New York.
Dr. Belton was rabbi in
the Budapest ghetto in 1944-
45, and sent the magazine
copies of official Hungarian
Supreme Court for Political
Cases documents that
proved his courage in aiding
the 70,000 prisoners of the
ghetto.
Hirado's editorial com-
mittee retracted allegations
published in a book review
of "Szent Imre Indulo." The
lengthy retraction stated in
part, "His conduct and good
deeds prove that he did not
evade the fate of his com-
munity, he did not go into
hiding in time of danger,
but stood fast at his post
quite often at the peril of his
life."
