Local Labor Zionist Alliance
Leader Abraham Beitner Dies

Abraham Beitner, a
founder of the Labor Zionist
Alliance of Detroit and a
member of the organization
since 1916, died Aug. 15 at
age 80.
Mr. Beitner came to
Detroit from Bendzin,
Poland, in 1914 and was
active in the People's Relief
organization, which aided
Jewish victims of World
War I.

ABRAHAM BEITNER

In 1918 he was a founder
of one of the first Jewish
secular schools in Detroit.
The school was part of the
national Socialist school
system.
During a trip to Europe
and Palestine in 1925 Mr.
Beitner attended the
cornerstone-laying cere-
mony of Hebrew Universi-
ty on Mt. Scopus, and was
one of the few Americans

Luigi Gorini, Aided
Jews During War

NEW YORK — Luigi
Gorini, a former Harvard
microbiologist who helped
more than 1,000 Jewish
youngsters emigrate to
Israel during World War II,
is dead at age 72.
Mr. Gorini was known
both for his research in
genetics and his resistance
to Fascism in his Italian
homeland. Harvard honored
him in 1965 for his dis-
coveries concerning the
effects of drugs on heredity.
He recently was honored
by Israel for his un-
derground work in Italy
during World War II.
Placed in charge of a Fascist
summer camp in the Italian
Alps, he converted it into a
refuge for Jewish orphans
fleeing from Europe.
