The Best of Everything

By Danny Raskin

YOU WOULDN't
BELIEVE how beautiful
the northwest areas of
Detroit are unless you sat in
the Ronde-View revolving
restaurant atop the Holiday
Inn of Southfield on
Telegraph at John Lodge
and 1-696 freeways . . . The
lovely landscaping, well-
kept buildings and soft,
billowy clowds drifting un-
der a gorgeous sunset.
And you couldn't imagine
how relaxingly pleasant it is
to spend an evening there
. . . especially with so ex-
cellent a waitress as Nancy
Lantzy, a very lovely, most
pleasant young lady, always
smiling and extremely ef-
ficient . . . "She's one of our
best," says Ronde-View
manager Milton Pappas
with a rightful pride . . .
Nancy is a former nurse's
aide, which may account for
some of her excellence with
people . . . She has been at
the Ronde-View since it
opened a year ago.
The food at the Ronde-
View is far from being the
type of fare you'd expect at
a Holiday Inn or such other
like place . . . The French
menu with English ex-
planations is not inexpen-
sive . . . and the food
borders on the very good
side of a gourmet's ledger.
Seating 260, the Ronde-
View makes a complete
revolution in 70 minutes
much slower and a lot
better than when we went
to its opening and at times
kind of thought we were on
a rooftop merry-go-round.
Nancy with the laughing
eyes brought us home-made
onion soup in butter and
sherry wine with a rich beef
stock, topped by a crouton
and parmigiana cheese and
browned . . . It was full-
bodied and delicious. . . .
Next, a salad and stewed
eggplant with tomatoes
which was very tasty . . .
Our main entree was
L'emince de Veal Ronde-
View . . . thin slices of veal
sauteed in butter and
covered with a subtle wine
sauce and cream, and fresh
raw slices of mushrooms
. . . It is an elegant dish
with a sauce that has few
peers ... . Our wine selec-
tion was a beautiful bottle
of Duhr's Piesporter
Goldropfschen with its
tender bouquet that in our
opinion goes so good with
veal.
Sitting at the window
watching the northwest
area slowly go round . . .
and the roof of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek aimed
directly at us . . . we sat
amidst portraits-on-glass of
sports celebrities . . . Hank
Greenberg's picture was our
companion on opening night
. . . and this time we were
highly honored to be by
hockey immortals Sid Abel
and Gordie Howe.
Dining at the Ronde-View
revolving restaurant atop
Holiday Inn of Southfield is
an enjoyable experience . . .
but a word of advice to the
gals and guys . . . Don't put
purses or other items on the
ledge . . . unless you want

to go hunting for them in
another part of the room.
CENTAUR RINK
Restaurant and Lounge will
be opened in September on
Drake Rd. and Walnut Rd.
. . . by Bob McDonald and
Bob Fracchia of the Roman
Terrace on Orchard Lake
Rd. and 12 Mile . . . plus
Abe Selesny among others
. . . It will serve salads,
deli-type sandwiches and
after 5 p.m., deep dish pizza
. . . Centaur Rink
restaurant will be a casual
spot taking up a lot of
property . . . about seven
acres . . . and include an
indoor golfing range and ice
arena.
LETTER DEPT.... "As
to your recent column
about the bad carry-out cor-
ned beef sandwiches you
received from many delis,
we are confident ours was
not one of them. My staff
and I pride ourselves on
good food whether it is in-
side or carry-out. Being a
delicatessen man for many
years, I know what it's like
seeing a bad corned beef
sandwich. However, in
almost every instance, they
were not made by "pros",
but by young kids who
didn't care and shouldn't
have been doing it in the
first place." . . . Dick Licht-
man, Northgate
Delicatessen.
WAYNE YOUNG-
BLOOD, of whom there are
very few better waiters
anywhere, is one of the
reasons for owner John
Young's success at
Carmen's Fior d' Italia on
Northwestern and 12 Mile
. .. He is the kind of waiter
everybody wants because
his pleasant personality,
quickness, care and know-
how make for very pleasant
dining.
The food at Carmen's Fior
d' Italia is fresh and
wholesome . . . with a
delightful salad bar . . .
Wayne made our salad for
us and it was a true work of
art.
Now entertaining
Fridays and Saturday
nights at Fior d' Italia is 4
ft. 101/2 inch "mighty
mite" songstress Patty
Haak, who has such a
powerful voice for a little
gal . . . And it's a very
fine voice, too, with lots of
full bodied notes coming
from vocal cords that
sound altogether different
when talking . . . Patty
does a great job on stan-
dards like, "Fly Me To
The Moon", "On A Clear
Day" and "Foggy Day In
London Town" among
others.
On piano, electric organ
and harmonica, Danny
Stevenson plays blues, pops
and standards with his duo
. . . He is a fine, crowd-
pleasing musician and ex-
cellent_ arranger . . . Only
fault Danny has is
remembering requests . . .
Otherwise, he does a heck of
a good job.
NEW NAME OF
Saksey's on Woodward and
Seven Mile Rd. will be Omar
