Rabbi James I. Gordon said in his very brief remarks to the informal gathering that ap- proximately one-third of the 300 Detroit area Young Israel families have representatives, either children or retired members, now living in Israel. He said credit for this must go to the 60-70 percent of the teenagers connected with Young Israel who spend a year studying in Israel at a yeshiva or un- iversity. Rabbi Gordon said the open house was arranged when it was found that 10 couples would be returning for visits this summer. Rabbi Gordon in- troduced Dr. Yehuda Gellman, who briefly responded for the olim. Dr. Gellman is a professor of philosophy at the Univer- sity of the Negev. Dr. Gelman and his wife emigrated to Israel five years ago. His family is active at Young Israel. He studied at an Israeli Yehiva for a year in 1961 and earned his doctorate at Wayne State University. A ten-day pilot trip spon- sored by the Israel Aliya Center helped him make the necessary contacts for his position at the University and to locate housing. Dr. Gellman also taught part-time at Hebrew University and Bar-Ilan and his wife is also teaching part-time. The couple have five children. Among the visiting olim were Rabbi and Mrs. Moshe Dombey. They made aliya two years ago, and are now leading the Ohr Somayakh Yeshiva unit at Givat Ada, south of Haifa. The yeshiva helps young Americans who have had little religious training. Rabbi Dombey became volved with Ohr Somayakh a little more than a year ago while tutoring one of its students. The government donated an abandoned absorbtion. center at Givat Ada at low cost to the yeshiva, and Rabbi Dombey's group now has 20 couples and 20 single men studying and working at Givat Ada.
