-the volume is a distinct
contribution to historical
writings about Detroit.
Several notable au-
thorities on Detroit's his-
tory are represented in
this volume, including
Henri Negri, the late
Henry D. Brown, Solan
Weeks, Rene Toujas and
Leonard N. Simons.
Extensively illustrated
with scenes dating back
to early days and with
important structures de-
lineating the background
of this city, the factual
and the legendary gain
status in a valuable col-
lective work.
Of unusual interest is
the essay by Leonard N.
Simons who has the dis-
tinction, as the retiring
president of the Detroit
Historical Commission, of
being the only remaining
member of the first com-
mission, having served as
a member of that body
continuously since 1940
under the several
mayoralties during those
36 years.
In his essay, "Cadillac:
A Retrospective View,
Simons critically com-
ments on the historic fi-
gure, basing his views on
three decades of studies
of the man Cadillac and of
research he conducted )
about him in France.

Cadillac Story, Detroit Founding
in Historical Society Volume

Detroit's 275th an-
niversary is definitively
outlined in an impressive
book published by Wayne
State University Press
for the Detroit Historical
Society.
"Cadillac and the
Founding of Detroit" is
the story of Antoine
Laumet de Lamothe
Cadillac who on July 24,
1701, was the pioneer
founder of this city.
The many essays in this
volume, therefore, are
the historically descrip-
tive accounts recording
Detroit's founding, and
