THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 14 Friday, August 13, 1976 Portugal Premier Hopeful for Lasting Tie With Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) — Portuguese Premier Mario Soares this week expressed his hope for the continuation of the friendly relations be- tween Portugal and Is- rael. In a cable to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the PortugueSe premier wrote: "I thank you for your message of con- gratulation on my assum- ing the office of prime minister of Portugal. I look forward to the con- tinuation of the friendly ties which already exist between our two states. A week ago, Soares told the Portuguese parlia- ment that the relations between Portugal and Is- rael may be settled soon. Israel has had a consul general in Lisbon for years, but Portugal never had an envoy in Israel. The Portuguese Minis- ter of Agriculture is ex- pected to visit Israel within a few weeks ac- cording to Davar, the Is- rael daily. During the visit, Portugal and Israel are expected to sign an agreement on agricul- tural collaboration. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; Yea, I have a goodly heritage. The meeting was de- manded after Bedouin leaders expressed anger over the decision last Wednesday by the Terezin Camp Memorial Due LONDON — The In- ternational Council of Jews from Czechos- lovakia said ,that a spe- cial Jewish memorial will be held Aug. 23 in tribute to the victims of the Tere- zin concentration camp. An official memorial was held in mid-June at Terezin, according to the ICJC, but it was dedi- cated to the camp's liber- ation by the Soviet army 31 years ago and the founding of the Czech Communist Party 55 years ago. The ICJC said several exhibits at that memorial depicted the dangers of nuclear weapons and modern warfare, using photographs of Hiroshima and Vietnam, but there was no mention of Jewish suffering at the concentration camp. Ministerial Committee on Israeli Arab Affairs, headed by Rabin, to ac- cept the recommendation of an interministerial committee that a com- mittee be set up' to negotiate a compromise with the Bedouins and that a supreme decisions committee rule on claims in cases whe -e com- promise settlements could not be reached. The Bedouins claim that the government de- cision will deprive them of most of the land they now own in the Negev. The issue has already been tested in the courts with the government winning in all cases. The decision by the ministe-. rial committee would provide the Bedouins with more compensation than they have received from the courts. , The meeting last Wed- nesday of the Ministerial Committee on Israeli Arab Affairs was its first since the Cabinet decided on May 23 to establish the committee in the wake of the March 30 disturbances by Israeli Arabs in the Galilee. 47 Nations Join Israel Chess Event; Arabs, Soviets Protest The Cabinet at that time also decided to set up an interdepartmental committee of directors general of ministries in- volved with Arab affairs and a Public Council on Israeli Arab Affairs with an equal number of Arab and Jewish members. ThE council will include 40 Arabs and 40 Jews with Rabin serving as its chairman.
