6 Friday, August 6, 1976 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ADL Charges Spiro. Agnew Is Spewing 'Classic Anti-Semitism' (Continued from Page 1) conducted by Agnew, en- closing the newsletter and membership applica- tion and subscription forms offering a patron membership for a minimum of $500. For les- ser sums, Agnew is offer- ing other types of mem- berships. Lawrence Peirez, chairman of ADL's civil rights committee, which is conducting continuing re- search into the new Agnew operation, reported: "Ag- new, in a foreword in the first issue of 'Memoranda,' calls on Americans to re- gard their news media `with the same suspicion •and distrust that they . . . focus on public officials or large corporations.' Yet, while Agnew says there is a need to bring the vital facts to the people,' the lead article, entitled `Mideast Time Bomb," consists of nothing more than typical Agnew distor- tions and misrepresenta- tions of facts. "What Agnew con- tinues to spew out," Peirez went on, "are his usual twisted half-truths — pro-Arab, anti-Israel, anti-news media." In the article, Agnew sought to use statements by the Social Action Commission of Reform Judaim and Rabbi Henry Siegman, execu- tive director of the Synagogue Council of America, to support the Agnew argument that prominent Jews and re- spectable Jewish organi- zations are critical of al- leged "Israeli im- perialism," Peirez said. Rabbi Siegman, how- ever, told the ADL that "the views Agnew attri- butes to me are a total fabrication," and an- nounced that he will start a libel suit against Ag- new. The Social Action Commission of Reform Judaism has told the League that statements critical of Israel which were attributed to it by Agnew were distorted and taken out of context of a resolution "that is supportive of Israel." Agnew claimed that Siegman "roundly criticized Israel for the treatment of Arabs living in the territories con- quered in the 1967 war." Siegman said: "The statement attributed to me by Spiro Agnew is a total fabrication, a delib- erate and malicious falsehood. The fact is that not only have I never said or written any such thing, but I have de- nounced those who have leveled such reckless charges against Israel "It is the height of malice to . criticize Israel for alleged mistreatment of Arabs in the occupied territories when, in fact, Israel — in the most try- ing of circumstances — has shown a regard for human and civil rights that is unheard of in the Arab states that are Ag- new's clients. Agnew's attribution of such malicious views to me is false and libelous and I am taking steps to press a libel action against him." In a related action, Breira, which describes GREAT LAKES LAWN SPRINKLER CO. • 15 Years Experience • Repairs • Service • Installation • Design • All work guaranteed Call 356-7963 11 itself as a pro-Israel or- ganization that proposes alternative strategies for achieving Israeli securi- ty, strongly dissociated itself from the context of the article in "Memoranda" in which it was quoted. The article said that Breira "sent an open letter to Israeli leaders condemning the `unfortunate killings' of Arabs in Galilee and de- ploring 'violations of civil rights and loss of life' on the West Bank." . Breira declared: "We unequivocally denounce such manipulation of re- sponsible Jewish dissent. While we have been criti- cal of some ISraeli policies, the characteriza- tion of those policies as synonymous with 'im- perialism' — especially by one so close to the manipu- lation of global power — is no less absurd than simi- lar Soviet and Chinese characterizations." The Breira statement added, "Agnew's anti- Israel and anti-Jewish biases disqualify him as a responsible advocate for Middle East peace." Forster said an ADL inquiry about Education for Democracy, Inc., shows that it was initially incorporated in Indiana on Sept. 16, 1971, with the alleged purpose of educating persons with- out regard to race, relig- ion, color or creed for fu- ture community leader- ship. Control of the organi- zation passed through a number of persons until Nov. 19, 1975, when arti- cles of amendment were filed with the Secretary of State of Indiana, changing the resident agent and the principal office and listing Agnew as president of Education for Democracy. Mary Ellen Warner, who has been Agnew's secretary, is listed as the organiza- tion's corporate secret- ary. Forster said that John A. Von tiannon, a magazine publisher in Bloomington, Ind., told the ADL that he was the previous president and resident agent for the or- ganization. Von Kannon added that when Agnew took over the organization last November, it was "just a paper, shell organiza- tion," which had retained its tax exemption. The publisher, who said he has been an admirer of- Agnew but is now "dis- gusted" with Agnew's views on Israel, declared that the former Vice President had told him he planned to use the or- ganization to hold con- ferences and publish books and a newsletter. Prior to the current nationwide mailing, Forster said, Agnew sent out 250 letters to a pri- vate list to seek contribu- tions to supplement what Agnew claimed was a "substantial contribu- tion" he had made to the organization for the pur- pose of disseminating "to opinion leaders and other citizens information now routinely supplied by the national-impact media." Meanwhile, Agnew de- fended his right to criticize Israel while de- nying he was anti- Semitic. "I'm entitled to my opinion without being followed around by the Bnai Brith Anti- Defamation League and being accused of being a bigot," he said in an in- terview on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" show. "I could be wrong, but I'm not a bigot." Victor Gold, Agnew's press secretary when he AJCommittee to Help Elderly NEW YORK — The American Jewish Com- mittee has announced a new project designed to combat laws and ad- ministrative regulations that discriminate against senior citizens. The project, titled Legal Advocacy Program for the Aged, will provide assistance in class action _suits, challenge dis- criminatory legislation or regulations, and aid in hearings before adminis- trative boards, according to Peter J. Strauss, Presi- dent of AJC's New York City Chapter, who made the announcement. Funded initially by the Brookdale Foundation, the program will start on a pilot basis in New York under the sponsorship of AJCommittee's New York City Chapter.
