nutes at Entebbe, - the
sensational Bantam
paperback.
It was an 11-day task of
gathering all available
facts about the heroic act.
It took Stevenson . to Is-
rael and there he had the
assistance in data-
gathering of Uri Dan, the
Maariv writer who has
also completed a book on
the Entebbe rescue work
which is being published
in Hebrew by Keter Pub-
lishing. Co.
The Israeli military ac-
tion had been named
"Operation Thunderbolt"
but was renamed "Opera-
tion Jonathan" in tribute
to the memory of the
American Lt. Colonel
Yonatan Netanyahu,
who lost his life in the
brief action that liber-
ated 103 people from the
terrorists.
An important fact em-
phasizes the Israeli de-
termination not to yield to
terrorists and not to sac-
rifice the lives of Israelis
to blackmailers and hijac-
kers.
Stevenson's recollec-
tion of a statement made
to him in March of 1970 by
Yerucham Amitai,
former deputy chief of the
Israeli air force, while fly-
ing over the Temple of
Solomon, said: "If Israel
should ever fail to protect
her own, she would cease
to have meaning. We
have been forced into ag-
gressive defense and the
stakes keep getting
higher.
"In the end, we may
have to choose between
action that might pull
down the Temple of Hu-
manity itself rather than
surrender even a single
member of the family to
the executioners.
"Survival in other cir-
cumstances is not survival
at all and all of us, what-
ever our race, won't be
worth a damn if we buy our
lives at the cost of our con-
science."
The late Amitai was a
close friend of Stevenson,
and the Israeli officer re-
sponsible for planning
the Ugandan air force. -
Stevenson reveals:
• In planning the dar-
ing midnight raid to re-
scue the skyjacking vic-
tims of Flight 139 held
hostage at Uganda's En-

tebbe Airport, the Israeli
task force used a highly-
developed form of hyp-
nosis on one of the previ-
ously released hostages
to obtain detailed infor-
mation on the layout of
the airport and the loca-
tion of the remaining hos-
tages.
• Seven of the 10 ter-
rorists were killed and
their fingerprints and
photographs recorded.
"Three other terrorists
it would seem, despite Is-
raeli denials, were taken
alive for interrogation."

The project for a book
about the midnight com-
mando operation got un-
derway at Bantam within
hours after the raid's
completion. William
Stevenson, author of the
current best seller A Man
Called Intrepid, an
analysis of The Secret War
and intelligence opera-
tions, had prior knowledge
of the planned mission
through his intelligence
sources.
A British and Canadian
foreign correspondent for
over 25 years, Stevenson
served in Kenya and
Uganda from 1962-64
where he met Amin and
others who became key
participants in the opera-
tion.
On July 6, Stevenson
flew to Israel where Uri
Dan, military and de-
fense affairs correspon-
dent for 1VIaariv, was al-
ready working on his own
"instant book" on the re-
scue for Hebrew publica-
tion in Israel by Keter
Publishing. Meanwhile,
in New York, Bantam set
in motion the editorial
and production processes
for the book.
Stevenson spent 11
days in Israel, writing
and researching through
his contacts and friend-
ships with Israeli per-
sonalities. He drew from
some of Dan's material,
including Dan's exclusive
interview with Ugandan
President Idi Amin di-
rectly following the suc-
cessful raid at Entebbe,
and conducted exclusive
interviews of his own,
such as with the Israeli
cabinet ministers and
Task Force, members of
the commando troops and
Premier Yitzhak Rabin.

`Shema' Importance Noted

BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

The recitation of the
Shema is important in Jew-
ish religion.
Judaism, in essence, has
very little dogma. It is a reli-
gion of action which speaks
louder than words. The one
most basic theme of the
Jewish faith is the unity and
singleness of the Almighty.
The belief in the one and
only God was basically a
theme introduced by Juda-
ism. Jews have paid a dear
price for clinging to this
tenet, thus rejecting any
dualism or trinitarianism.
It is basically the
"Shema" which expresses
this principle of faith,

especially in its first verse
— "Hear 0' Israel the
Lord our God, the Lord is
One."
While the Almighty has a
variety of names, each re-
ferring to a different attrib-
ute, there is basically only
one God. He is the God of
nature, transcendance,
judgement and of mercy.
The Jew is asked to pro-
claim this faith daily and to
express its relevance in the
actions of his daily life upon
this earth.

God is waiting on every road
that leads from intention to
action, from desire to satis-
faction.
Abraham J. Heschel

The June 27th skyjack-
ing is recounted through
interviewed hostages and
in hour-by-hour detail
through the diary of Is-
raeli medical student
Moshe Peretz, who kept a
journal of the ordeal from
the moment of the skyjack-
ing through the week-long
detainment.
Stevenson describes
the planning of "Thun-
derbolt, - which began as
early as Tuesday, June
29, two days after the
skyjacking, when the
sudden freeing of 47 pas-
sengers by the terrorists
"gave warning of the real
danger. -
In Stevenson's book,
the mission's planning
and preparations, intri-
cately carried out in total
secret, are seen through
the eyes of Brigadier
General Dan Shomron, in
charge of the operation,
Defense Minister Shimon
Peres and other Israeli
officials involved.
There are detailed por-
traits of participants on
both sides of "Thunder-
bolt" — its two leaders,
Shomron and the
American-born Lt. Col.
Yonatan Netanyahu;
Palestinian terrorist Dr.
Wadia Hadad, leader of
the Popular Front for the
Liberation of Palestine
(PFLP) who was behind
the skyjacking; and
Ugandan President Idi
Amin — plus background
on Israeli military man-
euvers which had pre-
pared them for such a
daring operation as
"Thunderbolt" and on
Uganda's diplomatic re-
lations with Israel and
Kenya, where the planes
landed to refuel and ob-
tain medical aid after the
raid.
Stevenson
also
examines the events fol-
lowing the raid, including
Amin's reactions to the
"aggression, - as he
termed the rescue, the
United Nations debates
during the days follow-
ing, and the search for
the missing hostage,
Dora Bloch.
