ing President Ford to
overrule a Department of
Labor decision not to
allow Detroit to use spe-
cial federal funds to re-
hire nearly 300 of 970 De-
troit policemen laid off
July 1.
Fisher is President
Ford's chief political
campaign fund raiser.
The mayor added that
because of the Presi-
dent's decision Detroit
will hire an additional
300-400 policemen.

The Circle of Service, a
project of the National
Federation of Temple
Sisterhoods, assists rab-
binic students at HUC-
JIR with scholarships
and grants-in-aid.
Cheryl Balban, a 12th grade student at Akiva Heb-
rew Day School, was presented with the Jewish Com-
munity Center's Samuel Linden Israel Scholarship. The
scholarship, established on the occasion of Linden's
70th birthday by his family and friends, is awarded to a
student on the basis of commitment to continued Heb-
rew study and outstanding scholarship. Cheryl, a 4.0
student and National Merit Scholarship competition
semi-finalist, will participate in a year-long study prog-
ram in Israel with her 12th grade class. Linden is at
right.

DR. ROCKAWAY
Dr. Rockaway received
his PhD degree in history
from the University of
Michigan in 1970, and
made aliya in 1971. He is a
senior lecturer in the de-
partment of Jewish his-
tory at Tel Aviv Univer-
sity, where he teaches
American Jewish history,
modern Jewish history
and American immigra-
tion history.
This past year he was
on sabbatical at Brandeis
University where he was
visiting scholar in the de-
partment of Near East-
ern and Judaic studies.
Dr. Rockaway also acted
as consultant to the
American Zionist Feder-
ation and was the Cleve-
land Jewish community's
scholar-in-residence in
October.
The Overseas Student
Program provides En-
glish-speaking students
an opportunity to spend a
year, spring semester or
summer studying at Tel
Aviv University. The lan-
guage of instruction is
English and all courses
are fully accredited in
American Universities. In
addition, a number of tui-
tion scholarships are av-
ailable.
