dangered by proselytiz-
ing forces, inspired reac-
tiviation here of a com-
mittee to assist the Ozar
Hatorah movement that
strives to organize
schools in endangered
areas and to rescue tens
of thousands of children
culturally and spiritual

The committee is com-
prised of Dr. Sion Sol-
eymani, chairman; Ada
Moseson, coordinator;
and Dr. Elie Aboulafia,
Marcel Behar, Shirley
Behar, David Chicorel,
Rabbi Joseph Moseson,
Joseph Nusbaum,
Seymour Rabinowitz and
A.M. Silverstein.
New efforts here in be-
half of the endangered
communities were in-
spired by the visit last
week of tZabbi Solomon
David Sassoon of Israel,
whose volunteer efforts
are taking him to many
American Jewish com-
munities to mobilize aid
in behalf of the Ozar
Hatorah tasks.
Meeting here with local
groups, especially the
Sephardic community,
Rabbi Sassoon described
the role of Ozar Hatorah
which aims to reach out
areas where there are no
schools or religious
facilities and where there
is danger of the youth
being completely lost to
-Jewry.
He pointed out, for
example, that in the

French areas between
Marseilles and Nice there
are 80,000 Jews from
Algeria and other lands
for whose children there
is not a single operating
Jewish school. .
"I see a conflagration,"
Rabbi Sassoon said, "and
we must come to the res-
cue of the spiritually im-
poverished Jews."
Defining the aim for
"spiritual rescue," Rabbi
Sassoon said the needs of
the hundreds of
thousands who emig-
rated from Algeria,
Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt
and Libya who settled
in France and other
countries must be pro-
vided for.
He said that Ozar

In a first settlement,

have been adjudicated.
Nearly 4,000 claims were
filed with the Foreign
Claims Commission
which made awards on
2,630 claims for a total of
113,645,205. According to
the State Department,
the Commission rejected
1,346 claims.
U.S. Department of
State advised the Interna-
tional Council of Jews
from Czechoslovakia that
claims of U.S. nationals
"arising after August 1958

REGO PARK, N.Y.
(JTA) — Almost 70 per-
cent of the families who
came to the Jewish Com-
munity Services of Long
Island for help during the
1975-76 year complained
that the bleak economic
situation had caused in-
creasing tensions in their
homes. The agency re-
corded that a record-
breaking number of 7951
families were served last
year, compared with 7398
for the previous year. Of-
ficials said that troubled
marriages and behavior
problems with children
were again the main
areas of agency concern.
Interviews with clients
rose from 30,352 to 34,890.
