Israel Firm Buys 20 Tons of Tobacco From whose
Lebanon
owner had accepted

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Dubek Cigarette Co., Is-
rael's largest cigarette man-
ufacturer, bought 20 tons of
tobacco from Lebanese
growers in the first large
scale commercial transac-
tion across the northern
border.
Up to now all trade has
been on an individual basis
but tobacco growers organ-
ized and elected a represent-
ative to deal with the Israe-
lis.
The growers were paid in
Israeli currency which can
be used to buy food, fuel and
other commodities in short
supply in southern Leba-
non. Israel is expected to
buy hundreds of tons of to-
bacco from the Lebanese
farmers.
Although southern Le-
banon has been spared the
ravages of the civil war,
the economic situation
there is bad. Many people
are out of work and there
have been several requests
that Israeli authorities al-
low the Lebanese to take
jobs in Israel. However,
there are several problems
that would have to be
worked out first, including
what the effect would be
on West Bank workers.
If permission is granted it
will probably be only for ag-
ricultural workers, al-
though construction work-

ers and technicians might
be included at a later date.
It also was reported that
Lebanese villagers will soon
be eating kosher chicken. A
truck load of frozen poultry,
wrapped in nylon bags bear-
ing the approval of the
Safed Rabbinate, along with
live poultry was on its way
to Kiryat Shemona Sunday
to be sent across the breaks
in the security fence to
southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, two mer-
chants from southern Leba-
non were in Kiryat She-

mona buying cooking oil,
rice, sugar and detergents.
One of the merchants told
Israeli newsmen that the
"mob" (Arab terrorists) set
fire to an apple orchard

medical aid from Israel.

Kahane Attacked
on Israeli Street

NEW YORK (JTA) - -
Rabbi Meir Kahane, foun-
der of the Jewish Defense
League, was attacked and
beaten by three unidentified
assailants on a dark Jerusa-
lem street recently.
A spokesman said that
the JDL founder, who re-
cently formed a new politi-
cal group in Israel called
"Kach" which will seek
Knesset seats in the next
election, had held a press
conference earlier in the day
during which he criticized
the government for endan-
gering the lives of the Jews
in Israel.
According to the spokes-
man, Kahane was walking
on Hanna Street in the Tel
Arza section of Jerusalem
after leaving a class he had
given to students participat-
ing in a JDL leadership
course when he was as-
saulted. The assailants left
Kahane bleeding and
wounded and fled from the
scene when an automobile
happened to pass by, the-
spokesman said.
Kahane was reportedly
taken to the nearest Red
Magen David aid station
where he was treated for
cuts and bruises on his head
and elbow. According to the
spokesman, Kahane believes
he was attacked by profes-
sional strong-arm men since
the assailants did not de-
mand any money nor were
any political slogans or
statements made during the
attack.

Thou shalt not pervert the
justice due to the stranger,
or the fatherless; nor take
the widow's raiment as
pledge.
