Reader Says That French Jews Share Concern Over Hijacking Editor, The Jewish News: I spent a month in Paris studying social studies through Wayne (State Uni- versity's) College of Lifelong Learning. I would like to share a few of my impres- sions observed during the week of the hijacking of the Air France plane. Sunday, July 27 I spent at a Bnai Brith picnic 90 miles outside of Paris. There was no TV, however, radios in the cars and at the picnic were continually tuned in for reports on how the hi- jacking had occured and what was happening with the hostages. They (French Jews) were upset and criti- cal of Air France's lack of security and the French gov- ernment's association with Uganda and President Idi Amin. Their sorrow and feelings of futility with the French government were very evident. During the week I had ap- pointments with other French Jews. Their hearts were heavy and they spoke often, re- peatedly about their anger asking what action would Americans take. On Sun- day, July 4, I attended a Bnai Brith all-day Jewish institute, held at a youth camp. What a change in everyone! What pride and exuberance by all for Is- rael. Agin :all ears, turn to radio reports of the dramatic rescue by the Is- raelis. They have the same con- cerns and pride for fellow Jews as we do. Their soli- darity march on May 30 in Paris, supported by 100,000 French Jews attending, dou- bled their expectations. They are participating Jews, representing the fourth largest Jewish com- munity in the world, and they do care. Esther Pastor NEW YORK (JTA) — The American Jewish Congress has called on the Ford Ad- ministration and the inter- national civil aviation _com- munity to seal off all countries that give sanctu- ary or support to air hijack- ers. The AJCongress called for legislation directing the President to suspend air service to: "any country used as a base of operations or training or as a sanctuary for terrorists; any country that arms, aids or abets ter- rorist organizations; and any country that continues to maintain air traffic with an offending state." The AJCongregs also urged legislation to curtail "all U.S. economic and military assistance to any nation that encourages, protects, supplies — or i• ri,„ ••• ■ =1444111•11Li Births July 23 — To Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. The statement urged that letters be sent to the Inter- national Air Transport As- sociation and International Federation of Airlines Pil- ots Association urging them "to make clear that they will no longer fly to any nation that: refuses immediately to return a hijacked plane, its passengers or crew; gives haven to those responsible for any hijacking; or fails to prosecute or extradite hi- jack terrorists promptly."
