A Review
In this very humorous
autobiographical sketch of
his first 30 years, "The First
30 Odd Years, An Autobiog-
raphy," Michael Braude,
who is known to many De-
troiters as a brother-in-law
and frequent visitor of the
late Judge Theodore Levin
and his wife, Rhoda, gives a
rollicking but unsentimen-
tal and highly perceptive
account of his own and his
family's experiences in war-

VOTE FOR BRECK
OAKLAND CIRCUIT JUDGE
David Breck believes the courts should serve the
people by striving for better crime control, equal
justice and improved court efficiency. He proposes:
new statutes to provide for certainty of sentence to
assure that criminals are not released until after
completing compulsory sentences; divorce counsel-
ing, to provide greater protection for the children of
broken marriages; voluntary probation officers, lay
persons who can act as' probation officers
supervised by the probation department. "Repeater"
criminals were reduced 50% by this method in other
communities.

author arrived at Ellis Is-
land in 1920 at the age of 12.
The father's shifting rabbin-
ical posts took the family
successively to Denver,
Colo.; Dayton, Ohio; and
Bridgeport, Conn. After col-
lege in Denver, the author
settled in Chicago.
Far different from the
usual biographical narra-
tive, the writing in this
book is by turns whimsi-
cal, cynical, witty and
filled with imaginative in-
sights. These are conveyed
with verve and force, and
with a pronounced comic
cutting edge, often
achieved by having the
thoughts and sentences to
take unexpected turns.
Highly successful in busi-
ness, the author retired
early a few years ago to de-
vote himself to writing. His
play, "Gettysburg," was
produced on National Edu-
cational Television, and a
number of his poems and
short stories have appeared
in Harper's, Commentary
and other magazines. He
also has written several new
plays that are being readied
for production. He currently
divides his time between his
residences in Chicago and
East Hampton, N.Y.
