press of being unfair, unbal-

and accused it of publishing
stories without checking the
facts.
The journalists retorted
that the government sup-
pressed information or gave
misinformation. The only
agreement to emerge from
the meeting was that the de-
.
bate be continued.
Rabin claimed that if
Israel had libel laws as
tough as those in Canada,

He differentiated be-
tween freedom of the press
and what he said was the re-
sponsibility of the press to
check facts. He-cited exam-
ples of what he considered
the Israeli press' careless-
ness with facts. He said that
during his five years as Am-
bassador to Washington,
American journalists invar-
iably checked with his office
and solicited his viewpoint
before printing stories re-
lated to Israel.
Journalists responded to
Rabin's remarks by accus-
ing the government of fail-

noted that the Rabin Ad-
ministration has abolished
the weekly press briefings.

Premier Rabin
Praises Nixon

TEL-AVIV — Premier
Yitzhak Rabin, speaking
to a meeting of volun-
teers at the educational
center in Zemach, had
some unexpected praise
for former President Ni-
xon. According to Rabin,
the former chief execu-
tive did more for Israel
than any other American
president. Rabin referred
to Nixon's orders to start
the arms airlift to Israel
during the Yom Kippur
War.
Rabin also praised Ni-
xon's Mideast policy,
claiming that he was the
first American president
in 29 years to be wel-
comed in Cairo and
Damascus because he
showed his determina-
tion to stand by Israel on
one hand and to help
achieve a political set-
tlement on the other.

Rabbi Urges Drive to Instill
Judaica into Jewish Lifestyle

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg,
president of the American
Jewish Congress, declared
that Jewish organizations
such as the World Jewish
Congress must not "lose
even one moment" in start-
ing a campaign to instill
Jewish content into Jewish
life.
The main components of
Jewish content, he said,
were links with Israel, Jew-
ish tradition and the He-
brew language.
The deep erosion in world
Jewry, the results of assimi-
lation and intermarriage,
constitutes a danger to the
continuity of the Jewish
nation no less than the ex-
ternal danger that threat-
ened during the Nazi era,
Hertzberg told the Israeli
Executive of the World Jew-
ish Congress which is mark-
ing its 40th anniversary.
He said the WJC need
not seek to replace the for-
eign ministry of Israel in
its political activities nor
need it attempt to follow
the lead of the World Zion-
ist Organization in purely
Zionist activities.
Its main task is to pre-
serve the Jewish nation and
its activities in inter-faith
discussions and efforts to

establish relations with
Third World nations are
also of great importance, he
said.
Hertzberg observed that
fund-raising campaigns and
political rallies for Israel no
longer constitute incentives
for Jewish life nor do they
fill Jewish life with suffi-
cient content.
He said the Israeli rescue
operation at Entebbe Air-
port in Uganda may have
raised Jewish prestige, but
this could be of a temporary
nature because the main
problems of Israel and Jew-
'shness have not changed.
