The traditional Tisha
b'Av Appeal for contribu-
tions to the Jewish National
Fund Land Reclamation
Program in Israel will be
made at synagogues and
temples in the Greater De-
troit area and throughout
the free world_ Wednesday
and Thursday,-
Phillip Stollman is chair-
man of the JNF Synagogue
Council Committee, and
Mark E. Schlussel, presi-
dent of Greater Detroit
JNF.
Tisha b'Av, the ninth day
of the month - of Av
(Thursday this year), has
been observed as a day of
mourning for nearly 2,000
years, because it has 'been a
day marking repeated ma-
jor tragedies in Jewish his-
tory.
In the Sixth Century
BCE, the Babylonians de-
stroyed the temple of Solo-
mon in Jerusalem. The
Temple was rebuilt and
then destroyed, more than
600 years later, in 70 AD,
by the Roman General Ti-
tus. It was also on this day
in 1492, that the Jews were
expelled from Spain.
Those who are not partici-
pating in synagogue or tem-
ple Tisha b'Av services may
mail or bring contributions
to the Jewish National Fund
office, 22100 Greenfield Rd.,
Oak Park, 968-0820.
