THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

42 Friday, July 30, 1976

Long a student of Bible
Law, as he terms it, Judge
James Clarkson, candidate
for the Oakland County Cir-
cuit Court, emerges as a
traditionalist who bases his
court studies on codes
founded in Old Testament
lore.

Having presided over the
famous Havdala Box case
which called for resort to
Jewish traditional princi-
ples, Judge Clarkson, al-
ready a devoted Bible stu-
dent from childhood,
became even more deeply in-
volved in the basic laws
which became the root of
Anglo-Saxon judicial prac-
tices.
"I am a convinced the
Mosaic laws and Jewish
tradition were the founda-
tion out of which we have
drawn our codes of law,"
Judge Clarkson said. "Lev-
iticus, for example, emphas-
izes the codes for marital ju-
dicature. In the Mishna, to
which I have turned when
occasions called for in-
terpretive transitions.

serves me often as a guide
and inspiration in my judi-
cial tasks."
"My teacher and mentor
was the late Rabbi Morris
Adler," Judge Clarkson
pointed out. "As Mayor of
Southfield it was my privi-
lege to lay the cornerstone
for the magnificent
Shaarey Zedek structure,
and I have had the privi-
lege of sharing in many
functions in behalf of Is-
rael and the Zionist cause
which I view as a great hu-
manitarian ideal."
"Therefore the pride I
take in accepting my
friends' designation of being
a member of the Jewish
mishpaha although my
faith is different," Judge
Clarkson added.
