Soviets Commute Leviev Death Sentence to 15 Years in Prison

NEW YORK (JTA)
The death sentence im-
posed by the Moscow
Municipal Court in De
cember 1974 on Mikhail
Leviev has been com-
muted to 15 years in
prison, according to re-
ports received by the
Greater New York Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry.
Leviev, the manager of
a store in Moscow, had
been charged with
"economic crimes" and
"anti-Soviet activity."
According to Malcolm
Hoenlein, GNYCSJ direc-
tor, Leviev had applied
for' and received permis-
sion to emigrate to Israel
together with his family.
A few days prior to their
scheduled departure,
Leviev was detained by
Soviet police.and held in-
communicado while a
21/2-year investigation
was undertaken, leading
to the trial.

Three non-Jews, tried
along with Leviev on simi-
lar charges, received five
to nine years sentences.
Because Leviev allegedly
would not cooperate with
the prosecutor, he alone
was condemned to death.,
As soon as word of the
death sentence was re-
ceived in the West,
thousands of telegrams
and appeals were sent to
the Moscow Procurator
and other Soviet officials.
Part of the campaign in
the West include de-
monstrations organized
by the GNYCSJ and other
Soviet Jewry groups; pro-
tests by Congressmen,
district attorneys and
other elected officials; as
well as appeals by
Leviev's wife.
Abrams,
Robert
GNYCSJ chairman, said
that the commutation is
once again an indication

MIKHAIL LEVIEV

of the potential effective-
ness of pressure from the
West. He added that
these actions, and many
others, may well -have
been the critical factors
in saving Leviev's life.

Jewish Defense Unit's Office
in France Wrecked by Bomb

PARIS (JTA) — A bomb
wrecked the offices of a lo-
cal Jewish organization ac-
tive in fighting anti-Semi-
tism and resurgent Nazism.
The bomb, a home-made
device consisting of a gas
cannister, damaged the
Paris bureau of the Interna-
tional League Against Rac-
ism and Anti-Semitism
(L.I.C.A.). There were no
casualties as the bomb ex-
ploded early in the morning
before the staff arrived for
work.
Police officials link the
explosion to other attacks
on Jewish organizations in
Marseilles, Nice and Paris.

Menuhin said in a let-

Mrs. Lekina was ar-

Joachim Peiper is the
former SS colonel whose
charred body was found
earlier this month. Police
believe the former Nazi
officer was killed by for-
mer resistance fighters or
deportees who resented his
presence in France.
Since Peiper's death a
number of anti-Jewish at-
tacks have taken place. Most
of these took place in Mar-
seilles but police believe the
attackers may now have
moved to Paris.
Police have now intensi-
fied their guard on Jewish
institutions in France with
certain organizations being
