Friday, July 23, 1976 41 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Seattle Rabbi Here to Promote Transcendental Meditation Use By HEIDI PRESS Rabbi Raphael H. Levine, emeritus rabbi of Seattle's Temple De Hirsch, in De- troit to address a meeting of the International Medita- tion Society chapter, con- tended that there was a def- inite relationship between Judaism and transcendental meditation (TM) and that a significant number of Jews, especially in the U.S., were practitioners and among the TM leadership. TM is practiced twice- daily for 20-minute periods. The practitioner sits down, relaxes and repeats a spe- `cic sound or word until he ars his mind of tension. According to Rabbi Lev- me, the relationship be- tween the TM movement and Judaism is in their ulti- mate goals. "The Maharishi (Ma- hesh Yogi, founder of the movement), wanted to create a perfect world, one, in which every indi- vidual would feel his own potentials for growth. Circuit Court Post Sought by Judge RABBI LEVINE "At the same time, Juda- ism looks toward the mes- sianic age or messianic ideal = to a world of justice, peace and brotherhood." "If we have a perfect world Jews will be able to survive." When it was suggested to him that the Jews have sur- vived in an imperfect world', Rabbi Levine said that in a perfect world "Jews will be able to survive without suf- fering or constant brutal- ity." A practitioner of TM for the past three years, the 75-year-old Rabbi Levine travels around the country trying to persuade others to join the movement. He remarked that former Grand Rapids rabbi, Harry Essrig, now of Los Angeles, was deeply inter- ested in the movement. The rabbi said that Jews figured prominently in the TM movement, as practi- tioners and in the leader- ship. He said that many of the teachers, writers and national leaders of the movement are Jews. He said many Jews join the movement because they feel neglected by the syn- agogue and community. In Israel there is a strong following of the movement, he said, but was unable to quote a specific number. In south - Oakland County, there are about 4,000 practi- tioners, many from South- field, Oak Park and Hun- tington Woods, where there are heavy concentrations of Jews. What does Rabbi Levine hope to achieve in his re- cruiting missions? He's trying to get the Jews back. "TM can help Judaism. It makes Jews better Jews."
