Jews Fled War

Quote

By the end of WorldWar I
Palestine's Jews numbered
only 56,000, one third less
than at its beginning.
Thousands died in the
fighting and other
thousands fled persecution.

"I think it is no exaggera-
tion to say that there is not
a square kilometer of land
anywhere in the world on
which there is concentrated
so much energy, so much
idealism, so much intellig-
ence, so much endeavor, as
on the square kilometer on
which work, dream and suf-
fer our halutzim . . . (They)
are one of our miracles. Per-
haps it is the stored-up
idealism of ages, come down
to them from their grand-
fathers, and . finding today
an outlet and an application
in Palestine."

Draft Evasion
Charge Dismissed

ascot

22101 Coolidge 1 Block So of 9 Mi

NEW YORK — A Federal
District Court judge in
Brooklyn, Jack B. Wein-
stein, dismissed an indict-
ment for draft evasion
against Sidney Salzmann, a
former Queens college stu-
dent now living in Israel.
Weinstein held that the
29-year-old Salzmann's
right to a speedy trial had
been denied and that the
government had thus vio-
lated his civil rights.

According to Weinstein's
109-page opinion the govern-
ment should have paid Salz-
mann's transportation from
Israel since Salzmann had
claimed in correspondence
with the government that it
was his lack of money that
kept him from returning to
the United States.
The decision could put
into question draft-evasion
charges against thousands
of youths living abroad.
