Congressman James G.
O'Hara was described this
week as the symbol of
American friendship for
Israel based on the
traditional pro-Zionist
belief as well as defensive
actions for Israel.
George Zeltzer, chairman
of the finance committee in
the O'Hara campaign for
the Democratic nomination
for the U.S. Senate, said
that the O'Hara record is
admirable not only because
in the Congressman's 18
years of service he has been
a leader in urging assurance
Of Israel's security by
means of American
assistance, but also because
he is a deep student of the
Middle East and is
motivated by a sense of
justice.
Zeltzer described O'Hara
as a liberal with strong con-
victions whose voting record
is not selfishly but
idealistically motivated. His
support of Israel is not, ac-
cording to Zeltzer, a result
of voting pressure.
In spite of the fact that
the district O'Hara
represents practically no
Jewish voting residents, he
has been a leader in defense
of Israel.
That is why, Zeltzer con-
tends, Senat6r Henry
Jackson has joined Daniel
Moyniham in expressing ad-
miration for O'Hara and his
legislative ability.
Similar views were ex-
pressed by Debbie
Goldberg, Irving Seligman,
Phil and Harold Warren,
Hannah Gladstone, Allan
Zemmol and others who
have joined Zeltzer and his
associates in backing
O'Hara's campaign for the
Senate.
O'Hara stated that U.S.
policy "should be based on
friendship and support for
those who share our ideas of
what a democratic society
should be like, and an arm's-
length relationship with
those who don't. This means
complete backing of Israel
in the Middle East."
The Macomb and St. Clair
County representative has
had a long record of support
for Israel and Russian
Jewry. In 1964 he made a
speech in the House con-
demning Soviet persecution
of Jews, and he was one of
the original sponsors of the
Mills-Vanik bill in the
House tying U.S.-Soviet
trade agreements to
liberalized Soviet emigra-
tion policies.
Since the 1967 Six-Day
War, O'Hara has co-
spQnsored or added his
name to more than a dozen

pieces of legislation or
resolutions in support of
Israel.
On the domestic scene,
O'Hara has served on the
House Committee on
Education and Labor, and
chairs the subcommittee on
post-secondary education.
He was floor manager of the
manpower development and
training act that provides
