Rep. James G. O'Hara sent a telegram to President Ford last Thursday which said: "When the United Na- tions Security Council meets tomorrow, I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to instruct the United States delegation to veto any resolution seeking to condemn Israel for its successful rescue of hos- tages who had been held captive by terrorists in Uganda. "Israel acted swiftly, boldly and decisively to save human lives. Hijackings and the use of innocent human beings as pawns in the poli- tics of terror must be stopped: terrorists and those who shelter terrorists must be made to realize that there is no safe haven for their operations. "When we were a fled- gling nation, our answer to the barbary pirates was: `Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute.' That should be our watch- word now, and it should be the code by which the UN operates. Israel deserves the gratitude of the civilized world, not its condemna- tion." Rep. Don Riegle said. "I congratulate the state of Israel for its daring initia- tives in freeing the hos- tages held by terrorists in Uganda. "While I regret the loss of life that occurred, I believe that failure to conduct the rescue operation would have resulted in many more deaths. "Hijackings, kidnappings, and other terrorist attacks must be met head-on. Oth- er-wise we all become hos- tages of extremist threats and actions. "What is at stake are basic human values — ei- ther we defend our beliefs with all our strength, or our freedom will always be in jeopardy. -- "So my affection and respect is with the mem- bers of the Israeli com- mando team who risked their lives to save the lives of others. I also applaud the Israeli government for its courage and strength in the decision to undertake the rescue operation. • "There Se many things that bind America and Is- rael in common cause — and a love of freedom is a central element. If the United States and Israel continue to stand strongly together, we will preserve the freedom of both our countries." In addition, John H. Shepherd, president of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit, wrote to President Gerald R. Ford, expressing the Council's "sincere admira- Sinner He that despiseth his neighbor is a sinner. —Proverbs M LTER tion" for his July 4 message of congratulations to Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Shepherd called upon the President to use this inci- dent as "the occasion for our government to renew-its ef- forts to deal effectively, on an international level, with such outrageous endanger- ment of human life."
