Philadelphia's Mikveh Israel
Cemetery Repair Planned

In 1738 Nathan Levy, the
patriarch of the Jewish
community in Philadelphia
and the merchant whose
ship brought the Liberty
Bell to Philadelphia, ap-
pealed William Penn's son
John for -a piece of ground in
which the dead of the com-
munity could be buried. The
proprietor agreed to the re-
quest and thus was founded
a burial ground at a site on
Spruce Street between
Eighth and Ninth Streets
which remains intact to this

While there are records of
361 burials in the Mikveh Is-
rael cemetery it is estimated
that some graves are un-
marked and that as many as
500 people may be buried in
the ground. Buried along
with Nathan Levy, are
Haym Salomon, the finan-
cier who gave his fortune to
the Revolution, and several
members of the Gratz Fam-
ily, founders of Gratz Col-
lege and The Pennsylvania
Co., Philadelphia's largest
bank.
In recent years Jewish
organizations in Philadel-
phia placed the Mikveh Is-
rael cemetery on the Na-
tional Register of Historic
Places. But the honor has
brought little money and
the cemetery fell into a
state of disrepair. There
have been minimal funds
available from the Congre-
gation Mikveh Israel for
care and maintenance. The
18th century wall and the
limestone grave markers are
crumbling.
The Colonial Philadel-
phia Historical • Society, in
attempting to restore Mik-
veh Israel cemetery is re-
questing funds from Jewish
communities across the
country. For information,

phia Historical Society, 292

Israeli Raid on Uganda
a Hot Topic for Books, Films

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Uganda rescue raid that
electrified the world has
spawned a series of instant
book and film ventures by
publishers and movie-mak-
ers who believe in striking
while the headlines are hot.
Bantam Books, a paper-
back publishing house, an-
nounced that it will have its
Hebrew-language, edition of
a book tentatively titled
"Ninety Minutes at En-
tebbe" off the presses next
week with the English edi-
tion to follow a week later.
The author is Uri Dan,
military affairs correspond-
ent of the Israeli newspaper
Maariv, who had a
30-minute telephone inter-
view with Ugandan Presi-
dent Idi Amin a day after
the rescue. The interview
will be included in the book
which is being co-authored
with a Canadian writer,
William Stevenson, Bantam
said.
Universal Studios in
Hollywood announced at
the same time that it will
produce a film.to be called
"Rescue at Entebbe." El-
liot Kastner, an indepen-
dent film-maker, an-
nounced a movie on the
same subject to be titled
"Assault at Entebbe."
Mery Griffin Productions,
however, appears to have
the inside track for its movie
version called "Odyssey of
139." The president of the
firm, Murray Schwartz, was

Meanwhile, the Israeli
Consul for cultural affairs,
Chaim Heffer, disclosed
that he has been approached
by four or five filmmakers
soliciting the Israeli govern-

said the government was
skeptical of Hollywood's
sudden interest.
