Symphony Slates `Cabaret at Cobo'

The Detroit Symphony
Orchestra will play three
benefit. "pops" concerts dur-
ing its new "Cabaret at
Cobo" series next month, to
help raise money for the
many youth concert pro-
grams which the orchestra
offers throughout the year.
DSO principal pops con-
ductor Richard Hayman
will be on the podium for
the three evening concerts
8:30 Aug. 17-19 in Cobo
Hall's Riverview ballroom.
The programs will be all-
orchestral, featuring violin-

Tribute to Kaplan

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Two officials and 25 lay
leaders of the Reconstruc-
tionist Foundation are visit-
ing Israel in tribute to Prof.
Mordecai Kaplan, who is
celebrating his 95th birth-
day in Jerusalem, after
making aliya at 93.

Jerry Pate, the rookie
professional from Pensacola
who scored a two-stroke vic-
tory in the U.S. Open, will
compete in the Canadian
Open. Golf Championship at
Essex Golf and Country
Club July 22-25.
Pate, first rookie to cap-
ture the U.S. title since Jack
Nicklaus, confirmed his en-
try to Royal Canadian Golf
Association officials this
week, and will compete for
the $40,000 first prize.
Pate, 22, also becomes eli-
gible for the $25,000 Peter
Jackson Triple Crown Tro-
phy, which will be awarded
to the player winning the
U.S., British and Canadian
Open championships in the
same year.

Pate will be joined by
Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino,
Arnold Palmer, Johnny
Miller, Gary Player, Mas-
ters champion Ray Floyd,
Lee Elder, Ben Crenshaw
and a host of other top pro-
fessionals.
In addition to playing the
Canadian at Essex, most of
the pros will play in the J. P.
McCarthy - Police Athletic
League tournament at Wa-
beek Country Club. Tickets
for both are still available;
Canadian Open through
Hudson's and Wards and
the J. P. McCarthy through
the Police Athletic League.

Poetry Contest

The West Bloomfield
Symphony Orchestra, con-
ducted by Felix Reznick,
will present a program in
honor of Detroit Homecom-
ing Week 8:30 p.m. July 23
in Ford Auditorium.
Proceeds will benefit the
Detroit Zoo and Detroit
Arts Council. Tickets are
available at Hudson's, Ford
Auditorium and at the Ma-
sonic Temple.

A $1,776 grand prize will
be awarded in the Bicenten-
nial Poetry Contest spon-
sored by the World of Poe-
try, a monthly newsletter
for poets.
Poems of all styles and on
any subject are eligible to
compete for the grand prize
or for 49 other cash or mer-
chandise awards. There are
10 first places of $200 each.
Rules and official entry
forms are available by writ-

Contest deadline is July
31.
