Danny Raskin's
LISTENING
POST
35 YEARS AGO, Rabbi
Leon Fram founded Temple
Israel . . . but few people
know the real reason why
. . While associate rabbi
to head Rabbi Leo Franklin
at Temple Beth El, Fram
had always been a Zionist
. . . throughout the years
when Zionism was not pop-
ular in the Reform move-
ment . . . Many say this
was the reason he was not
selected to succeed Franklin
. . . so struck out and
founded his own temple . . .
It has since been quite vindi-
cated that Zionism is not an
issue but a fact.
Temple Israel started out
with about 50 people on that
July 7, 1941, at the old Book-
Cadillac Hotel . . . and to-
day, with over 1,500 fami-
lies, is one of the world's
largest Reform congrega-
tions.
July 18 is a big day for
Temple Israel . . . That's
when they have a dual cele-
bration feting its charter
members . . . and the 80th
birthday of Rabbi Fram
. . . Many of the original
members who still retain
their local memberships
will be coming from all over
the country . . . The family
celebration of music and
memories will be open to
the public.
CONGRATS TO . .
Minnie and Barney Broder
on 40 years of marriage.
TIME APPROACHING
FOR the seventh annual
Bob-Lo Moonlight by 12
couples who comprise Mr.
and Mrs. Group, City of
Hope . . . It's July 21 for a
lot of fun, dancing, prizes
and surprises . . . For du-
cats call the co-chairmen,
Jules Olen (353-9531) or
Fred Silber (358-4992) . . .
Proceeds, of course, go to
the City of Hope National
Research Medical Center.
WONDER IF Yvonne
Steinberg ever got hubby
Bernie to fix the doorbell on
their home in Oak-Park?
. . . She's been asking for
years, but he's always "too
busy" . . . Bernie is an elec-
trician.
SAM BORIS, in town
from California, brings good
news that former Detroiter
Bernie Aaronson is coming
along fine after his recent
heart attack . . . Sam also
tells of a reunion given at
the Sportsman's Lodge for
all Central High graduates
of '32, '33, '34 and '35 . . .
About 250 attended . .
Sam says everybody is get-
ting older-looking except
him.
SOL AND SHIRLEY
,MILLER will move to Palm
Springs, Calif., when their
house is completed . . . in a
couple of months.
NOW THAT HER three
youngsters have reached the
teenager stage, Barbara
Stollman was ready to relax
. . . but the daughter of Ceil
and Morrie Richman doesn't
know the meaning . . . So
she and friend Nancy Fox
opened their own boutique
shop on Northwestern Hwy.
. . . and are heap busy mak-
ing wampum . . . as the
Two Squaws.
SHED A TEAR for the
respected doctor who squan-
dered every cent he owned
gambling and had to rob a
bank . . . But none of the
tellers could read his hand-
writing on the demand note
. . . (Gosh, V.P. Bruce
Lyons at Manufacturers
Bank, Eight Mile and
Greenfield, surely you can
do better than that!)
FELLOW IN A SMALL
compact car pulled up to
Mark Abram's Mobil station
for gas . . . Young attend-
ant asked, "Aren't you 'The
Bird?' . . . Driver said he
was and the attendant
asked if he could have his
autograph . . . "Sure
thing," said the driver . . .
The excited service gent
took his credit card, put it in
the machine and quickly
brought it out for The Bird
to sign . . . which he did
and drove away . . . The
young attendant got Detroit
Tiger pitching sensation
Mark Fidrych's autograph
. . but not on anything he
can keep!
DR. CLARENCE LIV-
INGOOD, head of derma-
tology at Ford Hospital, is
•official doctor for the Tigers
. . . and Mark calls him Dr.
Livingbad.
BETWEEN 1946 and
1949, Bernie Shandler was
with the United States adju-
tant general's office in Ja-
pan . . . serving as prose-
cuting attorney foresome of
the war criminals and as de-
fense attorney for others
. . . In one of the cases, he
did defense for a good friend
of Hirosha and Ryoka Ohta
. . . who he met for the first
time in 30 years . . I seated
at the same table for a
Henry Yee feast at Forbid-
den City on Orchard Lake
Rd.
DISA 'N DATA . . .
Esther Bicoll in town re-
cently asking to be remem-
bered to her "many kids"
. . . who helped her put on
those most entertaining
shows at Woodhull Lake
. . . Dave and Sadie Sher-
man looking great . . . Ad-
vertisement slogan for per-
fume-mist in plastic
containers: "No bottles to
break - just hearts." . .
With primary election less
than a month away, May-
nard Feldman is running
hard for Oakland County
Commissioner.
