54 Friday, July 9, 1976 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS UN to Debate Israel 'Aggression' in Uganda NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council debate on the Israeli rescue of terrorist hostages in Uganda was scheduled to begin today amid reports of A Legend Is Born The New York Times, July 6, 1976 The civilized world owes the Government and armed forces of Israel a permanent debt .of gratitude for the coura- geously conceived and brilliantly executed rescue of more than 100 hostages from pro-Palestinian terrorists at En- tebbe airport in Uganda early in the morning of—appro- priately enough—America's Independence Day. By this unprecedented action, the Israelis have demon- strated that the criminal terrorist practice of holding the lives of innocent civilians for ransom to achieve political ends can be successfully thwarted by application of suffi- cient amounts of resourcefulness, determination—and guts. The extraordinary raid 2,500 miles into unfriendly territory, to snatch the hostages out of the hands of captors supported by the petty tyrant who rules Uganda, was an effective declaration of independence from international blackmail, to which the ordinary rules of international law simply cannot apply. The question involved in the Israeli raid was less a matter of violating national sovereignty than responding to an act of international piracy. Terrorism of this type will, unfortunately, not be ended by this remarkable Israeli military operation; but the Is- raeli example proves to the world that it can ultimately be defeated, as it must be. Prime Minister Rabin rightly stated that the airborne operation had an almost legendary qual- ity about it: "It will be written about in the annals of the nation." It will also serve as an inspiration to other countries that, when the occasion demands and if they have the stead- fasuless and the will, they can do as much. Jefferson's Contributions Editor, The Jewish News: As an historian and a proud Jewess, I was looking forward to reading your Bicentennial section. • How- ever, I was disappointed with the results. I found that your articles special- ized in discussing George Washington: his letter and merits. Another subject the articles discussed was his friendship with the Jews of the Colonies. Did it ever occur to any- one that Washington and John Adams socialized with those Jews who were mer- chants. They were the elites of the society and had the money. Both Washington and Adams were true blooded snobbish Federal- ists. They disliked alien (immigrant) and lower classes of society. How do you think the Alien & Sedi- tion Acts passed? Throughout your various issues that pertained to the Bicentennial I saw a lack of mention about Thomas Jef- ferson. During these 200 years Jefferson's name has been sullied by attacks on religion and other subjects. If your researchers did a more careful job, they would have noted a man who was open-minded on most any subject. Why was Jefferson's Bill for Estab- lishing Religious Freedom never mentioned? Film Review Hit Editor, The Jewish News: I would like to take excep- tion to Heidi Press' review of the Israeli film "Daughters, Daughters." The film is a highly so- phisticated satire which makes use of caricature to ridicule the problem of Jew- ish male chauvinism. In this film, the producer and di- rector have captured the male ego superbly. What Heidi Press misses is the satire presented. One form of satire (Juvenalian) deals in exaggeration and "Daughters, Daughters" makes use of this technique to depict the problem preva- lent in many Jewish fami- lies which view the import- ance of a male child as paramount both to the memory of the deceased father and to the perpetua- tion of the familial lineage. While most families will consider the birth of a child of any gender a blessing, there are some parents (specifically the male partners) who con- sider their family incom- plete if the offspring are not of both sexes. There is even Talmudic sanction for such feelings. What producer Golan has done is to portray this par- ticular situation in its ex- tremity. What we are presented with is an exaggerated situ- ation with exaggerated characters. To miss this is to miss the humor, and ulti- mately to miss the satire on Jewish male chauvinism.
