Hebrew University
Honors Moynihan

JERUSALEM — The
Hebrew University has pre-
sented an honorary docto-
rate to Daniel Patrick Moy-
nihan, former U.S.
ambassador to the United
Nations.
In an acceptance speech,
Moynihan praised the Is-
raeli rescue of those aboard
a hijacked Air France plane
in Uganda, calling it "the
most explicit instruction
. . . that free men can and
will prevail."
Moynihan, a candidate
for the Democratic nomina-
tion for senator from New
York, said the terrorist as-
sault on the plane "has be-
come a metaphore for the
general assault on democ-
racy and decency which is
the sustaining ethos of to-
talitarianism in our time."

Montreal Rites
for Slain Athletes

MONTREAL (JTA) — A
memorial ceremony for the
11 Israeli athletes slain dur-
ing the 1972 Olympic Games
in Munich will be held Mon-
day at the Shaare Hasho-
maym Synagogue. Prime
Minister Pierre Elliott Tru-
deau will attend the cere-
mony.
The program will include
the lowering of Israeli flags
by 11 young people, each
symbolizing one of the ath-
letes murdered by Palesti-
nian terrorists of the Black
September movement.
Members of the 1976 Is-
raeli Olympic team and rel-
atives of the victims will
participate in the hour-long
service which will be under
the patronage of Montreal
philanthropist Allan Bronf-
man.

Aid Drop to Cut
Arms Purchases

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israel Defense Ministry of-
ficial says Israel's arms pur-
chases in the United States
in 1977 will not exceed $1
billion compared to $1.5 bil-
lion this year.
David Kochav, the minis-
try's economic advisor, said
the reduction was due to the
half-billion dollar cut in
U.S. aid for fiscal 1977. He
also forecast a significant
drop in Defense Ministry or-
ders in Israel.
