Co-workers Cite Bernard Panush;
Retiring After 37 Years With City
A 37-year record of serv-
ice to the city of Detroit was
given marked recognition at
a dinner at the Roostertail
Tuesday evening.
Barnard Panush, who re-
tired from his post as dep-
uty director of the Environ-
mental Protection Agency,
was feted at a dinner at-
tended by 400 co-workers.
Many distinguished
guests participated in the
event and joined in honoring
the retiree who plans to set-
tle in Florida with his wife.
Under the chairmanship
of James Watts, head of
the Detroit Department of
Public Works, the dinner
at the Roostertail, at-

Detroit Common Council
President Carl Levin pre-
sented a resolution signed
by all Councilmen.
In behalf of the city of De-
troit, addresses also were
delivered by Councilmen
William Rogell and Clyde
Cleveland.
On behalf of the Jewish
community, commenda-
tions for Panush's many
services were expressed by
Bnai Brith President Mar-
tin Weston and Jewish
Community Council Presi-
dent John Shepherd.
Among the presentations
was a symbolic shovel, sig-
nifying the "cleanliness" by
the honoree in his services
to the city.
Others who appeared on
the program with brief ad-
dresses included Conley
Abrams, who spoke on be-
half of APWA, the county
workers who also had a res-
olution for Panush.
The honoree's response
included reminiscences of
his 37 years of service in the
Environmental Protection
and Maintenance Depart-
ment, and was marked by
humorous references to his
maify experiences in the
Jewish community and in
that post.
Panush has been active
for many years in the Jew-
ish Community Council
and serves as a vice presi-
dent. He is a member of
the International Bnai
Brith Adult Education
Commission, chairman of
the Bnai Brith District 6
commission on Israel, and
past president of the Met-
ropolitan Detroit Bnai
Brith Council, Tikvah
Lodge and Michigan Re-
gion Bnai Brith Youth
Organization.
He also serves on the
boards of the Wayne State
University Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation, the Michigan
Region Anti-Defamation
League, Jewish National
Fund and its youth commis-
sion, and the Jewish Histor-
ical Society of Michigan.
Panush was director of
Historic Fresh Air Meeting
Set for Brighton in August
The annual meeting of the
Fresh Air Society will be
held 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at
Camp Tamarack, Brighton.
President Robert Kasle
said the meeting has histori-
cal significance, marking
the 75th anniversary of the
Fresh Air Society.
