THE- DETROIT' J1W1SHINEWS- =

Israel's Sports Fanaticisa and
the Russian Immigrants' Plight

BY HASKELL COHEN

(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

It had to happen sooner or
later, namely, the Russian
immigrants to Israel, upset
over their plight, are con-
trasting•Israeli attitudes
towards sports with their
approach to the Russian
olim.
During the past few days
Haskell Polarevich, head of
the Organization of Former
Prisoners of Zion, during a
poorly attended protest vigil
in front of the Israel offices
of the Finnish Embassy,
which handles some of the
Soviet affairs in Israel,
bluntly came out with a
statement to the effect that
"Had the Israeli public been
able to show aliya a fraction
of the enthusiasm they dis-
play over a football match,
immigration to Israel would
have been much greater."
We don't want to get in-
volved on the subject of
aliya. The fact does remain,
however, that for a small
country Israel evinces a con-
siderable amount of interest

and generates a lot of enthu-
siasm for its various sports
teams.
Soccer plays a vital role
in the daily life of Many Is-
raelis for the simple rea-
son that the state permits
a controlled lottery to take
place every week on the
National League football
games. You may have
read, recently, where an
Arab residing in a small
community near Nazareth
won $300,000 in the weekly
pool.
Some of the winnings
have become so astronomi-
cal that the government now
has placed a ceiling on the
top prize that can be allo-
cated to a first place winner
during any given week.
• Basketball is now vying
with soccer for popularity in
the sports field. There is no
question but the hoop game
has come along rapidly ever
since Nat Holman intro-
duced the sport to Israelis in
1949. Today every village
and hamlet and kibutz have
basketball courts laid out,

From now on there is
going to be competition
among amateur Israeli bas-
ketball teams for profes-
sional quality American
players. It is an open secret
that all of the amateur
teams in Europe employ ex-
ABA and NBA players on
their national teams.
If Israel is to maintain its
well earned recognition
among the European bas-
ketball teams as one of the
stronger club team coun-
tries, it will have to seek out
professional players. Now

Damon Corp. To
Expand in Israel

HAIFA — Knesset mem-
ber Abba Eban was the
guest speaker last week at
the dedication of the new
home of the Julius Silver In-
stitute of Bio-Medical Engi-
neering . Sciences at the
Technion — Israel Institute
of Technology.

NEEDHAM HEIGHTS,
Mass — Damon Corp., a
leader in the medical labor-
atory services and animal
health products fields, has
announced expangion plans
for its Israeli subsidiary,
Vineland Laboratories Ltd.,
manufacturer of poultry
vaccines and general veteri-
nary products.

One wing of the four-
story building houses var-
ious projects in bio-mechan-
ics and medical physics;
another is dedicated to ac-
tivities in bio-electronics
and bio-medical instrumen-
tation. An electronics work-
shop and a machine shop
also occupy space in the
building. A library, meeting
rooms, and seminar rooms
are also available for use in
the Technion's bio-medical
research and education
program.

that the NBA has absorbed
the ABA there is going to he
a wealth of good playing
material available to be ex-
ported abroad. Unfortun-
ately, Israel is going to have
to vie with Spain, Italy,
France and other countries
to line up some of this up-
coming available talent.
One can readily see that a
Russian Jewish activist,
who virtually had to fight
his way out of the Soviet
Union is unhappy about the
Holy Land's apathy to his
plight. He sees all the hulla-
baloo over sports while he
feels ignored by the local
citizenry.
A perusal of the Israeli
sport pages don't send
these Russian immigrants
into paroxysms of joy
when they see the Mayor
of Jerusalem being outfit-
ted with a soccer uniform
by the Jerusalem Betar
eleven, the recent National
Cup champions.
With all this sports activ-
ity on the. mind of the Israe-
lis it is not hard to fathom
why the Soviet olim rapidly
are becoming disenchanted
and looking for relief else-
where.
Who would believe that
sports in some fashion could
determine the flow of Soviet
emigres?

The ascent of this game
has become so heavy that
the Basketball Federation,
against its will ; has been
forced to rescind a long
standing rule against non-
Jewish players participat-
ing during the regular
league schedule. Hence-
forth, each team will be
able to play one foreign
basketball player.

Brotherliness
and Love

Be it thy will, 0 Lord our
God, to cause to dwell in our
lot, love, brotherliness,
peace, and friendship; to
widen our boundaries
through disciples, to pros-
per our goal with hope and
with future, to appoint us a
share in the Garden of
Eden, to direct us in thy
world through good com-
panions and good impulse,
That we may rise in the
morning and find our heart
waiting to fear thy name.
