the outcome of the mission
but deplored the casualties.
Otherwise, the French gov-
ernment has adopted a more
reserved attitude which
some observers describe as
"frankly disappointing."
The public, however. reacted

enthusiastically to the Is-
raeli action.
Israelis, meanwhile, were
unhappy over a statement
read in Paris on behalf of
the Air France flight crew
that was rescued along with
the other hostages. The

statement, which some Is-
raelis insist • was prepared
by the French Foreign Min-
istry, contained high praise
for the conduct of Ugandan
President Idi Amin but only
perfunctuory reference to
the Israeli rescue operation.
It was read to newsmen in
Paris Sunday by the flight
engineer of the hijacked
plane. The pilot refused to
read it, Israeli sources said.
The French flight crew
disputed the charge by the
hostages and the Israeli mil-
itary that Ugandan troops
collaborated with the hi-
jackers. Some Israeli offi-
cials who had intimated
that President Amin ma7
have known all along of the
hijackers plan to land at En-
tebbe, said Monday that the
Ugandan leader was proba-
bly as surprised as anyone
by the landing. But after-
wards it is believed, he col-
laborated fully with the ter-
rorists while seeking to
improve his image by pro-
viding for the comfort of the
hostages.
Sources confirmed that
Israeli Premier Yitzhak
Rabin called President Val-
ery Giscard d'Estaing to in-
form him of the mission's
successful outcome. How-
ever, the French president
did not respond.

The French, observers
believe, are embarrassed
and fear the possible con-
sequences of the Israeli ac-
tion both in Africa and
among the various Arab
states. The French press,
on the other hand, in its
majority warmly approved
the mission.

A number of African
embassies in Western Eu-
rope contacted by Jewish
Telegraphic Agency corre-
spondents refused to com-
ment on the action.
The Soviet Union de-
nounced the Israeli action as
another manifestation of
Zionist aggression" and a
violation of Uganda's sover-
eignty.

Prime Minister James
Callaghan issued a state-
ment saying he was very
pleased at the outcome of
the Air France hijacking
affair. But his statement
did not take the form of a
message to Israel which was
;een as a demonstration
that the British Labor. Gov- -
ernment does not want to
anger Amin and his Arab'
supporters.
