Frick, JOlyt9, 1976 19 THE DETROIT' JEWISH NEWS Idi Amin Claims He Was Wronged, Threatens Kenya (Continued from Page 18) understand that Israel is determined not to submit to blackmail and to over- come its enemies. \ _ Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jew- ish Congress, who is pres- ently in Israel warned that Israel must be extremely careful now because its ene- mies might engage in acts of reprisal. But he described the rescue as "an historic event in the glorious history of Israel." Rabbi Alexander Schin- dler, chairman of the Con- eerence of Presidents of 1ajor American Jewish _ Jrganizations, in Israel on Conference matters, de- clared that the liberation of the hijacked passengers, coming on July 4, was of symbolic significance for Americans "who see Israel as a sister democracy de- voted to the prophetic ideals of human dignity and social justice that animates both our nations." Idi Amin Claims Uganda Was Wronged "You have wronged me, I am counting now the bodies of my soldiers," President Idi Amin of Uganda told Maariv correspondent Uri Dann who reached him by telephone Sunday at the Presidential office in Kam- pala. Commenting on the res- cue raid, Amin complained, "Your Hercules planes flew in and my soldiers did not want to shoot them down," he told Dann. Amin vigorously denied that he had cooperated with the hijackers. He claimed that, on the contrary, he had defended the Israeli hostages. He said he had left the Organization of Af- rican Unity meeting in Mauritius to help work for their release without bloodshed. Amin insisted that the hijackers were the only ones holding the hostages and that his soldiers remained some 200 meters distant from the building where they were being held. He said he had allowed the hi- jacked Air France jet to land at Entebbe last Mon- day only because it was run- ning out of fuel. "We really took good are of the hostages," min told Dann. "We ve them everything — food, toilet articles and so on — and what do we get in return — you kill my people." Amin claimed that his `coops could have given 'Attie to the Israeli com- Apt mandoes but they did not. He said he had control of the situation and, after all "it was only a small thing." Dann said he had surpris- ingly little difficulty reach- ing Amin by phone. He said he spoke to only one official in Kampala before Amin himself came on the line. He said the conversation lasted a half hour, that Amin sounded in tears some of the time and his feeling was that the Ugandan leader had not really grasped what happened. Israeli officials vigorously denied Amin's charges that .Kenya had collaborated with Israel in any way in carrying out the rescue mis- sion. Some foreign press reports indicated that the Kenyan capital of Nairobi was swarming with Israeli agents -during the week the hostages were being held. The Israeli rescue planes landed briefly at Nairobi on their way back to Israel. That fact and the strained relations between Kenya and Uganda have lent some credence to reports that the Kenyans gave at least tacit support for the rescue. The Kenyan government, how- ever, has flatly denied this. Kenya does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Amin accused Kenya of "collusion with the Zion- ists" and threatened "to retaliate in whatever way possible to redress the ag- gression." But in a state- ment late Monday night, he said Uganda does not have the air power to at- tack Kenya. This may indicate that the Israeli commandoes de- stroyed more than the 6-10 Ugandan MIG fighters they claimed after the raid. Amin was known to have had 48 MIG15s, 17s and 21s prior to the attack.
