THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Violinist Samuel Dushkin, 82 NEW YORK — Samuel Dushkin, a violinist who helped to bring modern composers to public atten- tion in the 1930's, died June 24 at his Manhattan home. He was 82. Among those whose early works he introduced to the public were Ravel, Proko- fiev, Gabriel Pierne, Blair Fairchild and Igor Stravin- „.1„. he Russian-born musi- ,Aan was brought to the U.S. by his family at the age of 8, and Blair Fairchild, the composer took him under big, wing and took him to •rope to further his career a violinist. - As a result, he had the opportunity to study with such famous teachers as Remy, Fritz Kreisler and Leopold Auer. Mr. Dushkin was asso- ciated with major orches- tras in Europe, the United States, Israel and Egypt, and also gave recitals. He is responsible for first performances of such works as Ravel's Tzigane, and works of Prokofiev and Mar- tinu. He also intorduced works by Gabriel Pierne, Fairchild and Stravinsky. Mr. Dushkin performed joint programs with Stra- vinsky for a number of sea- sons and recorded Stravin- sky's Duo Concertant, with the composer on the piano and Mr. Dushkin on the violin.
