JDC Aids Israel
Day-Care Centers

JERUSALEM — Infants
and toddlers do not study at
the university, but the He-
brew University of Jerusa-
lem is reaching out to give
Israel's young children, age
1-3, a better start in life
through a novel progam in
partnership with the Joint
Distribution Committee,
UNICEF, the Ministry of
Education and the Israel
Corporation of Community
Centers (ICCC).
In community centers
serving disadvantaged fami-
lies in many parts of Israel,
the concept of profession-
ally run parent-child day-
care programs has taken
hold in recent years. How-
ever, trained personnel to
direct such programs have
been virtually non-existent.
Now, with a $23,000 grant
from the American Joint
Distribution Committee,
$50,000 from UNICEF and
additional support from the
Ministry of Education, the
university has embarked on
an experimental program to
train directors and supervi-
sors for those parent-child
day-care programs in com-
munity centers.

BAT YAM (ZINS) — An
agreement for the sale of Is-
rael's brewery combine to
investors from Canada was
finalized here last month.
The sale price was reported
at approximately $8.2 mil-
lion, largely payable in cash.
Israel's two breweries, lo-
cated in this Tel Aviv suburb
and in Migdal Haemek, in
Galilee, supply all the coun-
try's demand for beer, and
also market some soft
drinks. Certain quantities of
beer have been exported,
and observers believe for-
eign sales could be in-
creased.
