A Jew affixes a "mezuza" on every door in his home because it is so commanded in the Bible (Deuteronomy, Ch. 6). Some claim that it is required so that the Jew remembers that the Al- mighty is omnipresent and that his presence should be sensed everywhere. This consciousness of the Al- mighty's presence can serve to prevent. a Jew from wrong-doing even in his privacy. The Kabalists (e.g., Re- canati) consider the mezuza as a means of protecting the home and faith in the sym- bol of the mezuza and a feel- ing of security. It might also be that the mezuza is a means of keep- ing the Jew constantly asso ciated with the word of the Almighty. Since the mezuza contains a parchment scroll upon which are written some paragraphs from the Scriptures, the word of the Almighty is thus constantly found in the presence of the Jew. Some claim that this deci- sion is a model of ideal life both outside the home and inside the home, i.e., on both sides of the doorpost to which the mezuza is affixed. There seem to be two con- flicting opinions in Tal- mudic literature. One con- tends that the mezuza must be affixed in a horizontal position while the other as- serts that the mezuza be af- fixed in a vertical position. The rabbis of later years compromised in ordering Although no terrorist has ever entered the kibutz, since the Yom Kippur War approximately 70 have been killed trying to penetrate the area and several neigh- boring settlements have been victimized by PLO gunmen. Kibutz members regularly carry Uzi sub- machine guns whether on guard duty, eating in the communal dining room, or cultivating their peach or- chards. Most of Adamit's 41 members, 34 of whom are American, are in their late 20's. They came because the kibutz is small and young. All male kibutz mem- bers, accompanied by a unit of eight reserve sol- diers regularly assigned to Adamit, take their turns at guard duty. They also serve in the army as do many of the unmarried Israeli girls. New immi- grant women have been given weapons training by the military authorities. A number of parents (there are 19 children on Adamit, the oldest 31/2) wor- ried about the effects peri- odic alerts might have on their children. "So far the only 'feedback' we've gotten," said a young father, "is that in the nur- sery school a few miles away, our children are con- sidered very brave because they live on a border kibutz and occasionally have to sleep in shelters." The internal conflicts cur- rently ravaging Lebanon have kept terrorist activities at a minimum, giving kibutz members more opportunity to "get out for an evening." Many travel to Nahariya, a nearby seaside resort, for a special movie of a few hours at a coffee house. The kibutz itself hosts lecturers, na- tionally renowned perform- ers and first-run films. The love of the Almighty which a Jew has in his home must travel with him as he moves across the threshold from his private domain to the public thoroughfare. The concern and politeness a Jew may have in public life must travel with him as he crosses back into his private domain from the public arena. S&O POOL DOCTORS be Cherow, Says -.
