New Orleans Jewish Community Center. Supervising
him at the JCC in Cherry Hill is Sandy Blovad, director
of health and physical education. Ashkinazi was placed
at the New Orleans JCC through the National Jewish
Welfare Board's personnel services, which had received
the referral from the New York Association for New
Americans.

NEW YORK — A bilin-
gual Russian-English orien-
tation manual for newly
arrived Russian immigrants
was published here by New
York Association for New
Americans, it was an-
nounced this week by Dr.
Herbert Bernstein, the set-
tlement agency's executive
director.
Title "Welcome to New
York," the booklet offers a
basic settlement informa-
tion. The manual is distrib-
uted to immigrant families
at Kennedy Airport follow-
ing their arrival.
The 36-page manual in-
cludes brief sections on
NYANA and its services,
making a start, learning En-
glish, education, locationg a
job, laws and regulations
dialing with the right to
work, making and keeping
appointments. It also pro-
vides rudimentary informa-
tion on synagogues, tem-
ples, Jewish centers and on
Jewish education for both
children and adults.
A number of sections deal
with New York and cover
banks and their use as well
as public services including
the transit system, police,
fire, libraries, telephone,
postal and telegraphic serv-
ices.

Born in Odessa on July
20, 1950, Ashkinazi re-
ceived his diploma from
the State Institute of
Physical Culture in Volgo-
grad. He was a each of
acrobatics and gymnastics
froin 1968 to 1973 and
toured Russia from 1973 to
1974 as an actor-acrobat
with the Moscow State
Circus.
Ashkinazi began work at
the New Orleans Center in
May after orientation and
training at the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Southern
New Jersey in Cherry Hill
under the supervision of
Sandy Blovad, the Center's
health and physical educa-
tion director.
JWB also has received re-
ferrals of Russian Jewish
immigrants from the Amer-
ican Council for Emigres in
the Professions and the
Brooklyn Council of Rus-
sian Immigrants.
According to Arthur
Brodkin, JWB community
consultant who is assigned
to the recruitment and or-
ientation of professional
health and physical educa-
tion personnel for Jewish
Community Centers, YM
and YWHAs and camps,
these immigrants have
skills in soccer, track and
field, boxing, bicycling, vol-
leyball, gymnastics, and
special exercises for older
adults.

Jewish Education
Meeting Planned

Over 200 Jewish teachers,
camp counselors and youth
group leaders will convene
at the first Conference on
Alternatives in Jewish Edu-
cation at Brown Univ., Prov-
idence, R.I. August
29-September 2. This will be
the first education confer-
ence planned primarily for
teachers.
The conference is being
sponsored by the North
American Jewish Students'
Network.

NEW. YORK — Igor Ash-
kinazi, a 25-year-old Rus-
sian Jewish gymnast who
toured Russia as an acrobat,
has joined the health and
physical education staff of
the New Orleans Jewish
Community Center through
arrangements made by the
personnel service§ of the
National Jewish Welfare
Board.
Ashkinazi's assignment
at the New Orleans Center,
according to Dr. Avrum I.
Cohen, Center executive di-
rector, will include teaching
acrobatics, gymnastics and
other athletic skills, games
and sports.
The New York Associa-
tion for New Americans re-
ferred Ashkinazi to JWB,
and JWB in turn referred
