Meaning of the Zizit
Zizit ("fringes"): is the
name of the tassels attached
to the four corners of special
(four-cornered) garments
worn by men in fulfillment
of the bibilical command-
ment in Numbers 15:37-41
and Deuteronomy 22:12.
According to the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica, it has been
suggested that the zizit
served as a talisman or that
it was instituted in order to
distinguish between male
and female garments which
were very similar in biblical
times. In the latter case it
served as a protection
against immoral conduct
(an interpretation derived
from Numbers 15:39).
Talmudic literature in-
vests the commandment of
zizit with exalted symbol-
ism. The rabbis regarded
the zizit as a reminder to the
Jew to observe the religious
duties, giving it a function
similar to that of the me-
zuza on the doorposts and to
the tefillin on the head and
arm. The Talmud brings the
parable how a person was
saved from sensual sin be-
cause he wore fringes.
The biblical command-
ment prescribing the en-
twining of a blue cord in
the fringes is regarded as
essential because blue, the
color the sky, was also
supposed to be the color of
the "throne of glory."_Dif-
ficulties in obtaining the
dyeing material for this
purpose caused rabbinic
authorities in the second
century BCE to waive this
requirement, the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica reports.
In modern times, each zi-
zit consists of one long and
three short white threads
which are passed through
the holes in the four corners
of the garment and folded so
as to make eight threads.
They are then fastened with
a double know. The long
thread (called shammash) is
wound around the other
threads seven, eight, 11, and

This number, together
with the Hebrew numerical
value of zizit (600), amounts
to 613, the number of the
biblical commandments of
which the zizit are to re-
mind- the wearer (Num.
15:39). Ziziyyot of wool or
linen are ritually fit for a
tallit of whatever material.
A silk or cotton tallit,
however, should have zi-
ziyyot of only the same fab-
ric. The minimum length of
the zizit threads should be
four thumb lengths. If one
of the zizit threads is torn, it

the Temple seemed to have
suspended the existence of
such charismatic figures.
The eschatological era,
when the temple is expected
to be restored and universal
truth and justice will pre-
vail, is traditionally ex-
pected to see the reappear-
ance of such a figure. It is to
be clearly understood that,
according to Jewish tradi-
tion, even though this`per-
son, the king, to be known
as the Messiah, will lead the
people to and in the age of
deliverance, the ultimate
redeemer is the Almighty
himself. The Messiah is
merely His agent.
There are some modern
writers who attempt to
distinguish between the
concept of a personal Mes-
siah in the form of a hu-
man being and the concept
of what has come to be
known as the Messianic
age. Indeed many reli-
gious texts speak of the
eschatological age as the
"Days of the Messiah."
While this may make it
easier for those who find it
difficult to conceive of a
personal Messiah, the con-
cept is really one and indi-
visible.
Any development in hu-
man history, though insti-
gated by the Almighty, is al-
ways carried out through
the means of an agent or-
dained and appointed by the
Almighty.

`Tzaddik' Is Righteous One
The term "Tzaddik" is a
term which means "the
righteous one." In the Bible.
it sometimes refers to the
Almighty Himself who is
regarded as "righteous"
since all His judgements are
perfect. It is also used in
regard to humans who are
sometimes called "right-
eous" in the sense that they
are just and true. It some-
how implies a sense of jus-
tice and perfection.
In Hasidic lore and prac-
tice the "Tzaddik" is the
term given to the rebbe, the
spiritual leader of the Hasi-
dim whose thoughts are al-
ways with the Almighty
and who thus raises the
thoughts and prayers of his
followers towards a state of
perfection towards the Al-
mighty.

is customary to replace the
whole fringe.
A person not wearing a
four-cornered garment is
exempt from the mitzva of
zizit since the religious
duty of wearing zizit is not
a personal one. In order to
fulfill this biblical com-
mandment, however,
pious Jews always wear a
tallit katan ("small four-
cornered garment.")
Women are exempt from
the duty of zizit as the ful-
fillment of this command-
ment relates to a specific
time and women are exempt
from such obligations: zi-
ziyyot have to be worn only
during the day, based on the
Bible verse "ye may look
upon it" (Num. 15:39) which
excludes the night.
Jewish View of Messiah
The origin and meaning
of the Jewish belief in the
Messiah is often questioned.
The word "Mashiakh"
means the annointed one."
In the Bible the term origi-
nally was used to apply to a
person whose appointment
to high office is sanctioned
by the Almighty and who
thus is "anointed" according
to the Almighty's designa-
tion to carry out the terms
of the office as ordained by
the Almighty. This referred
to a high priest or a king.
In the prophetic literature
of the Bible the term was
also applied to a person for
whom the Almighty desig-
nated a special purpose in
history. For example, Cy-
rus, the Persian king who
granted permission for the
Jews to rebuild the Holy
Temple, was also referred to
in such terminology (Isaiah
45:1).
Thus, some of the pro-
phets spoke of the deliver-
ance of the people of Israel
to come as being executed
through a descendant of
the House of David who
was annointed for king-
ship.
Generally speaking, the
Almighty "appoints" cer-
tain charismatic figures to
carry out his plans in the
human world who are "an-
ointed" as a symbol of their
designation for that special
purpose. The destruction of

BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX
Friday, July 2, 1976 33
Rabbi Jacob Joseph of
Polonnoye claimed that the
Tzaddik of the Hasidic
movement is like a channel
through which God's over-
flowing grace comes to the
people. He is sort of a mysti-
cal figure who sometimes
descends to the level of im-
perfect humanity and in
engaged in this sinful world
to raise his followers to the
lofty heights of perfection.
Some looked upon him as
a miracle maker. Others re-
fused to regard any human
as a miracle maker and sim-
ply regarded the Hasidic
Tzaddik as a guide to the
worship of the divine. Oth-
ers thought of the Tzaddik
as a human example of the
status which every human
could achieve and a model of
what every human should
strive to be.
