The film, starring Shai K. Ophir as Shabtai Alfandari, written and directed by Moshe Mizrahi and pro- duced by Menaham Golan, centers on a father's obses- sion to have a son who will survive him to say Kadish. The father, Alfandari, has eight daughters. His obsession overwhelms him and he tries various outrageous means to have a son. The first attempt is a visit to a mystic or seer. The mystic utters an incredible prescription to Alfandari and gives him an amulet to wear and talisman to hide under his wife's pillow when the main item of the pres- cription — making love to his wife — is to be carried out. When the wife produces Daughter No. Nine, Alfan- dari seeks another route. He visits his attorney who draws up an agree- ment, to be signed by Al- fandari and his mistress, whereby if the mistress bears a son, Alfandari will divorce his wife, marry the mistress and bestow a bounty of luxuries on her. However, if the mistress produces a daughter, she will receive $100,000 in damages "for her trou- ble," but none of the luxu- ries — like marriage — from Alfandari. The conditions of the agreement are so incredibly outrageous that the mis- tress leaves the attorney's office before she ever hears Plan Arts Classes Limited menu also available Big Beaver Rd.. east of Coolidge. When Alfandari returns home, his wife has left the newborn to the other daugh- ters, who in turn desert their father for his vileness. Alfandari and his assistant are relegated to the task of taking care of the baby and refer to Dr. Benjamin Spock's "Baby and Child Care" (in Hebrew) to figure out which end to burp and which to change. Yet, the movie drags even though it is only 1'/2 hours long, and whatever is so hi- larious, as reported in the advertisements, is a mys- tery. The film depicts an ob- sessed, sick man and there is nothing amusing about mental illness. All sympa- thies to the women's libera- tion movement aside, this daughter suggests that "Daughters, Daughters" is a film worth missing. Artist Guild Has Sidewalk Sale The Artist Guild of De- troit's Second Annual Side- walk Sale will continue through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, at 6555 Sec- ond Ave. across from the General Motors and Fisher Buildings. The fair will feature craftsmen, artists, and photographers. In case of rain the fair wilrbe held in the lobby of the Fisher Building. Sapir Favored Gen. Weizmann TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The late Pinhas Sapir, who was serving as finance minister under Golda Meir after the Yom Kippur War, favored naming Ezer Weizmann as chief of staff. However, Golda stubbornly refused to accept this suggestion, ar- guing that the chief of the general staff has to be an active army officer. These disclosures appear in a book about the late Pin- has Sapir authored by Ar- yeh Avneri, a staff member of the newspaper, Yediot Ahronot. Avneri refers to an inter- view that took place with Sapir several months before his death in which he re- vealed that he had also con- sidered the candidacy of Gen. `Arik' Sharon. He finally settled on Gen. Ezer Weizmann because Sharon was too much in- volved in the "War of the Generals."
