Embalming Prohibited

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

of the body and thus disal-
lowed.
Embalming procedures
normally force the blood out
of the major blood vessels
and out of the body. Usually
this blood is discarded a,nd it
should be buried.
In some cases those who
do the embalming will ex-
cise certain parts of the
body which is again consid-
ered a prohibited disfigure-
ment of the body.
Others do certain surgi-
cal procedures on the body
for cosmetic reasons which
also is considered a disfig-
uring insult to the body.
The body is to be treated
with reverence as one of the
Almighty's creations and
ought not to be subjected to
unnatural treatment and
disfiguration in such a way.
It is better to be cursed
than to curse others.
—Talmud

Jewish tradition prohibits
embalming of the dead for a
number of reasons. Gener-
ally speaking, embalming
interferes with the natural
process. Embalming proce-
dures usually require the
body to be cut over its major
arteries. These incisions are
considered a disfiguration
