At the beginning of this year, Hamiel reports, some 550 young men and 350 girls were enrolled at these various institutions. They include such well known places of learning as Kerem BeYavneh, Yeshivat Sha'alayim and Kol Torah, and some newer and less knOwn institutions, such as the Neve Yerushalayim girls' seminary in Jerusa- lem, which cater specifically for "ba'alei teshuva" — young people with little reli- gious background. The Yod- Gimmel program is the de- partment's latest and rap- idly growing plan in the field of "Shnat Limud." At present, there are 131 youngsters from the U.S. taking the "Yod-Gimmel" courses at four institutions, "and we could have many, many more if we had the room for them," Hamiel says. The fatalities occurred when the terrorists, who landed on the Tel Aviv beach from a rubber boat March 5, 1975, seized hos- tages at the nearby Savoy Hotel and subsequently blew up the building. Ob- servers here believe, how- ever, that the death sent- ence is not likely to be carried out. Another terrorist involved in the same raid, Hamed Darwish, was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was not one of the commandos but captained the boat that landed the killers. Gary Davis, a former American, and Parsifal Taorha, who described him- self as a former Swiss na- tional, were denied entry to Israel because they .held no recognized valid passports. Initially, Davis refused to leave on his own volition. The pilot of a TWA airliner that was supposed to take the pair out -of Israel would not have them aboard be- cause Davis had threatened to create a disturbance. He and his companion were apparently persuaded to leave peacefully by Abie Nathan, the free-lance "peace envoy," who talked to them in jail.
