Abortion Reform
Causes Uproar
Among Israelis

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
New reforms of Israel's
abortion laws have caused
an uproar among the coun-
try's gynecologists. Until
now, abortion has been per-
mitted only when the moth-
er's life is in danger. Now it
is proposed to allow abor-
tion during the first three
months of pregnancy with
the approval of a two-man
committee, a gynecologist
and a public health or social
worker.
The country's gynecolo-
gists stated that they would
not cooperate. They main-
tained that women could
not decide to abort without
firm limitations and that
the border line between
abortion and infanticide
was very narrow. It has
been estimated that 60,000
abortions
are carried out

annually
in Israel. The new
legislation would cut down
the number of "back street
operations."
