NEW YORK — Every
Wednesday evening. at Hai-
fa's Machane David Day
Nursery 20 adults sit on the
floor and play children's
games.
Mickey Stern, by day the
supervising teacher of 80
pre-schoolers, quietly moves
from group to group, point-
ing-, out small details like
shape. and color, and ex-
plaining which learning con-
cepts can most effectively be
introduced. After coffee,
cake, and an informal dis-
cussion, the parents leave
for home, each carrying the
game he has checked out for
a week.
The Machane David Toy
Library had such good re-
sults that this year the
Haifa Municipality has
combined funds with the
Jewish Agency to establish
additional toy libraries.
Ruth Gazit, coordinator of.
Day Nurseries for the Haifa
Relief Services, said that
everyone connected with
Anita's project agreed on its
importance.

The Toy Library at Ma-
chane David was begun last
year by Anita Weiner. She
is a lecturer at the School of
Social Work of Haifa Uni-
versity, which is a recipient
of United Jewish Appeal
monies. Her idea was to
teach parents to play with
their children.

"Although many of the
families are second and
third generation Israeli,
--thay are on a low cultural
level. The relationships
between parents and their
.young children is poor.
Little attempt is made to
_stimulate the youngster or
to listen to him; most
homes are without toys."
With the help of a cash
donation from a Disapora
Jew, Anita and Mickey
bought educational games.
Then, aided by other teach-
ers, they began a campaign
among the parents. Anyone
who brought a child to the
nursery was repeatedly in-
vited to learn about the Toy
Library. At first attendance
was poor, but those who
came enjoyed the weekly
meetings. Soon many people
were participating.
NEW YORK — Dr. Aaron
Greenbaum, director of cul-
tural and religious activities
in Israel of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, received
the Mordecai Ben-David
Award at the 45th annual
commencement of Yeshiva
University last week.
Dr. Greenbaum joined the
American Joint Distribu-
tion Committee in Israel in
1955. He began his career in
communal life in –Portland,
Maine. During the years
1940-45, he was the state
chaplain of the Maine Har-
bor Defense Area, was a
member of the Governor's
Council for Rehabilitation
of Servicemen, and headed
coordination of rescue work
for European Jewry.
For 10 years after that he
was located in Yonkers,
N.Y., traveling extensively
for the Rabbinical Council
Torah Tour Commission,
visiting isolated Jewish
communities and college
campuses. He also headed
the first Rabbinical Council
Education Study Mission
which investigated the edu-
cation problems of rescued
children in Israel. During
this period he also taught
Bible-and Talmud in Yesh-
iva College.
Jewish holiday for that mat-
ter?
The varying dates are ac-
counted for by the fact that
ours is the lunar calendar.
Unlike the calendar used in
every day life, the Grego-
rian, which follows the posi-
tion of the sun, the Jewish
calendar follows the moon.
In early talmudic days,
the commencement of a
new month used to be an-
nounced from Jerusalem
to the surrounding dis-
tricts by beacons or mes-
sengers, the rise of the
moon having been seen by
witnesses and duly
checked by the authorities.
Our calendar is based
upon calculation and can
probably be traced back as
far as the early Greek as-
tronomers who were known
to the Rabbis of talmudic
times. One of these astrono-
mers discovered that a
month is almost exactly 29
days, 12 hours and 44 min-
utes. Another Greek who
lived even earlier found that
the moon or lunar yearsare
grouped in sets of 19 which
form a unit. The Jewish
Patriarch Hillel II who lived
in the- Fourth Century CE
used these findings of the
Greek astronomers and ac-
cordingly fixed the Jewish
calendar.
Here is the way to calcu-
ate tilt. Jewish calendar: If
r
the time between one new
moon and the next were
exactly 29''2 days, then the
problem would be solved by
fixing six months at 29 days
and six months at 30 days.
But there are three reasons
why our mathematical oper-
ation would not be true.
One is that we have for-
gotten the extra 44 min-
utes; the second is that
Yom Kippur must never
fall on the day before or
the day after Shabat, and
Hoshana Raba must never
be on Shabat; and the
third, we must never for-
get that the Jewish day
commences six hours
fore midnight. To ovt
come these difficulties, th...
Jewish calendar contains
a number of leap years
every 19 years. The leap
years are the third, sixth,
eighth, 11th, 14th, 17th
and 19th.
Consequently, we add
another month — Adar II;
and Adar I gets 30 days in-
stead of 29. To prevent the
difficulties with Yom Kip-
pur and Hoshana Raba
mentioned above, the festi-
val of Rosh Hashana must
never fall on a Sunday,
Wednesday or Friday.
Ye shall not steal, neither
shall ye deal falsely, nor lie
one to another.
—Leviticus
