THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS June 25, 1976 5 Hollywood's Pioneering Adolph Zukor is Remembered By HERBERT LUFT HOLLYWOOD (JTA) — Adolph Zukor, who died in his sleep at his Los Angeles apartment June 9 at the age of 103, was one of the last surviving founders of the Hollywood film industry and one, who according to his own promise, outlived all of his enemies. He was born in Ricse, a village in Hungary, on Jan. 7, 1873 — a year when the U.S. cavalry was still fight- ing Indians on the Western plains, a subject that was to be grist for many hundreds of Hollywood movies. He came to New York in 1889 with $40 in his pocket and •worked his way up the lad- der from a sweeper for a York furrier to a re- ..._icted member of the film trade. Together with Marcus Loew, he opened the first Penny Arcade -in 1903. Later he switched from moving picture machines to the nickelodeon showing two- reelers in converted stores with the image projected onto the screen. During a meeting in 1967, Zukor told me about his first successful venture in 1912 when he brought the full-length Sarah Bernhardt feature, "Queen Elizabeth," over from France. He recalled that the customers waited in line to see the "God- like" Bernhardt on stage. Hardly anyone at that time could imagine that a talent of such magnitude could be transported across the ocean in a tin can. with association In Charles Frohman, Zukor formed the Famous Players Film Ltd., its name taken from the .slogan, "Famous Players in Famous Plays." Finance Minister Ye- hoshua Rabinowitz has been urging all ministries to re- duce their budgets voluntar- ily to absorb inflationary price rises. According to Rabinowitz, the inflation rate is running at 31 percent instead of the 25 percent an- ticipated _when the budget was drafted. Peres fought_ the cut, claiming Israel's main prob- lem is defense and not the economy. While dedicating a rehabilitation center Sun- day, he said the only part of the defense budget that would not be cut is the more than $100 million to be spent for the rehabilitation of soldiers. A proposed Viilue Added Tax (VAT) expected to be approved and in affect by July 1 will cause an Arab general strike on the West Bank and in East Jerusa- lem according to Arab merchants. But Rabinow- itz said he does not believe the tax can be instituted until October. The VAT would tax every stage of production and raise prices by an estimated five percent. On the positive side, Rabi- nowitz reported that Israel's trade deficit was $250 mil- lion less in 1976 than in the first quarter of 1975. How- ever, the Israel price index rose 2.1 percent last month, bringing the cost of living rise for the year to 14.2 per- cent. The Israeli Treasury is also _launching a campaign to abolish "summer hours" whereby some civil servants work seven-hours instead of eight hours in the summer. At the same time, Premier Yitzhak Rabin delivered a stinging attack on civil serv- ants, and especially teach- ers, for "not pulling their weight." Hackett, "The Count of Monte Cristo," with James O'Neill and features with Minnie Maddern Fiske, Mary Pickford and Ethel Barrymore followed. A lunch at Delmonico's in New York with Jesse L. Lasky inspired the merger of Famous Players-Lasky Corp. in 1916. This was the forerunner of the Para- mount empire. In 1917, Famous-Lasky absorbed Paramount and Zukor became president. He was at the helm of the firm until 1935 at which time he assumed the chairmanship of the company. He re- mained with Pa-ramount until his death. cOor0.,eCtoc0.,(0.,‘"Zo Daily—Hospital Sympathy FRUIT BASKETS 3 Times Daily Nation-Wide Delivery WEDDING—PARTY—BAR MITZVAS GOWNS '29-'49-'99 WE CAN FIT YOU—SIZES_6 TO 44 SHANDELS 154 SOUTH WOODWARD— Nr.
