The Best of Everything

By Danny Raskin

FOLKS
WHO'VE
BEEN looking all over for
small perch and frog legs
.can end their search . . .
The delicious yum yums are
at Bloomfield Canopy on
Orchard Lake Rd. and Ma-
ple (15 Mile).
When Bloomfield Canopy
opened 14 years ago, it was
the culmination of a dream
for Anna and Frank Strat-
ton Jr., who had saved their
money just for this opera-
tion . . . Anna came here 27
years ago from Bavaria . . .
couldn't speak English . . .
uncle was manager at Club
Berkley . . . she started out
peeling onions and potatoes,
sweeping floors washing
dishes, etc. . . Anna and
Frank Jr. were married 22
years ago while he was a
foreman at General Motors.
When Bloomfield Cano-
py's doors first opened,
chef from Club Berkley
came here and stayed until
last December . . . did not
leave until he had given
Anna his famous recipes
for perch, frog legs and
turtle soup.
Bloomfield Canopy was
built from the ground up,
and is still a family opera-
tion, with Frank Jr. owner,
and Frank III and Jim Kutt-
nauer co-managers.
Seating is for well over
200 in two rooms with two
double elevations (original
capacity was 116) . . . Last
May the comfortable and
very intimate spot was rede-
corated, with Anna showing
her _abilities also as an inte-
rior decorator.
Originally, Bloomfield
Canopy was just a dining
room and cocktail lounge
with a divider . . . Eight
years ago, it was made into
two beautiful rooms sepa-
rated by a cement wall for
private banquet facilities.
Having dinner there was
a delightful experience
. . . After our crock of
excellent cheese with
crackers, pleasant, always
smiling, waitress Debbie
Holland first brought us
one of the best looking
"salad bars" in town . . .
the lettuce .-. . and on a
lazy susan, all the fixins
. . . In other words, you
don't walk to a salad bar
. . . it comes to-you.
. Charlie Malito, who has
been chef at Bloomfield
Canopy more than six years
. . . and worked together
with the former gent, sent
out our small fresh perch
and frog legs . . . and a
huge baked potato for a
most delicious taste thriller.

CHUCK MUER'S POP-
ULAR outdoor P'Jazz con-
certs on the pool terrace at
Hotel Pontchartrain will
feature twice as many big-
name road bands this sum-
mer as ever before . . . The
Wednesday and Friday aft-
er-work concerts started
with Woody Herman . . .
and includes Maynard Fer-
guson, Stan Kenton, Buddy
Rich, The Dorsey Band,
Mercer Ellington, and the
Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band
. . . Concerts run from 6 to
10 p.m. . . . $1.50 for local
bands, and $3 for road

bands.
DON'T KNOW HOW
she does it, but Goldie Mill-
er's (Joe) cheese blintzes are
soft and fluffy with a deli-
cately delicious flavor . . .
Her chopped herring is a
prize . . . No, Goldie doesn't
own a restaurant . . . but is
one heck of a good cook.
NEXT UP ON THE db's
Club at Hyatt Regency is
Margaret Whiting for three
days, July 1, 3 and 4 . . . $5
cover.
PET PEEVES . . . Wait-
resses who pour coffee into
your cup when the saucer is
sopping wet with or without
a napkin soaking up the
spillage . . . You never see a
fine waitress such as Donna
Platt among others do this.
A LOST ARE IN so
many places . . . and very
nice touch . . . is hostess
Susan Botterill at TBQ's
Other Place on Dougall Rd.
in Windsor going to tables
and asking if everything is
enjoyable.
NINE PEOPLE had
champagne recently at
Henry Yee's Forbidden City
City on Orchard Lake Rd.
between 13 and 14 Mile . . .
as shrimp from Bangledesh
was tried here for the first
time . . . They are huge,
looking much like lobster
tails and especially culti-
vated in fresh water . . .
Regular shrimp comes from
10 to 15 a pound . . . The
Bangledesh shrimp is 3 or 4
to a pound.
As usual, Henry Yee
made it another of his culi-
nary experimental feasts
. . . with hot and sour soup
(mushrooms, egg drops and
sea weed), cold chicken
cooked in soy sauce, Sze-
chuan beef, marinated fish
balls (without any trace of
fish taste) that lobk and
have the consistency of
matzo balls, and marinated
beef cooked with bean curd
. . . Everybody had ice
cream with creme de
menthe except Al Silver who
loves chocolate so much that
Henry Yee is giving him a
case of Hershey chocolate to
take to the Orient on his trip
. . . Our fine, pleasant and
congenial waitress was Bon-
nie Rodriquez.
Others in the party were
. . . Henry and Seiko Yee,
Dr. Jayanta Hazra, PhD
from Bangledesh; Hiroshi
Ohta, general manager of
Mitsubishi, the world's larg-
est corporation, and his wifc
Ryoka; Bernie Shandler,
v.p. of Pathfinder Global
Ltd., Frieda Goldman and
ourselves.
MAIL DEPT. . . . from
Rube Zissman . . . "On two
different occasions, my wife
Florence and I were told
that no reservations were
needed at the Clamdiggers,
and both times we were in-
formed that reservations
are necessary. The second
time, the other couple who
joined us, drove all the way
from Grosse Pointe but
couldn't get served."
IF YOU DON'T WANT

burger or one of the other
things on a wall menu, try
