Newmans Mark 60th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Sidney J.
Newman of Carriage Lamp
Dr., Southfield, will be hon-
ored by their children Sun-
day at a luncheon at the
Kingsley Inn on the occa-
sion of their 60th wedding
anniversary.
Newman was born in
Braddock, Pa., and moved to
Detroit in 1912. Mrs. New-
man, the former Vera Wol-
enburg, was born in Detroit.
Her parents were among
the founding members of
Temple Beth El.

The Newmans were mar-
ried by Dr. Leo M. Franklin
on June 29, 1916, at the orig-
inal Pontchartrain Hotel.
They have been active mem-
bers of Temple Beth El for
the past 60 years.
Their children are Mr.
and Mrs. Sidney J. New-
man, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard (Sylvia) Forrest.
The couple have four grand-
children and two great-
grandchildren.

sentatives of the Samaritan
community in Israel were
presented with a facsimile
of a 13th Century Samari-
tan Pentateuch by the He-
brew University of Jerusa-
lem.
The original, written in
Nablus in 1215-16 by the
scribe Abi Barkhatah ben
Abzahutah, is part of the
Sassoon Collection of He-
brew and Samaritan manu-
scripts which were acquired
for Israel last fall at an auc-
tion in Zurich.
