THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS June 25, 1976 13 N.Y. Jews Ask Equal Time to Rebut Carmichael Bias NEW YORK (JTA) — Three major national Jew- ish organizations have sharply condemned anti- Zionist remarks made by black activist Stokely Car- michael during an interview on the WABC-TV "Like It Is" program Sunday. Two of them have asked for equal time to rebut Carmi- chael's statements. Naomi Levine, executive director of the American Jewish Congress, who re- quested the right to appear on "Like It Is" "to respond to Carmichael's vicious lies," declared that it was "deeply regrettable" that WABC- TV "has seen fit to have as its guest on June 20 Stokely Carmichael, an incendiary revolutionary with anti- Semitic and anti-American views." Haskell L. Lazere, exec- utive director of the New York chapter of the Ameri- can Jewish Committee, Vatican Backs Habitat Statement TORONTO (JTA) — A member of the Vatican dele- gation to the recent "Habitat" conference in Vancouver said last Thurs- day that the Holy See sup- ported "Habitat's" Declara- tion of Principals adopted at the closing session last week even though it was rejected 15 Western countries, eluding the United States, ecause of its anti-Israel political implications. The Declaration did not refer to Israel or the Middle East conflict directly. But it contained a reference to "all For Custom Drapery Cleaning, Call DRAPERY CLEANERS "All That The Name Implies" We Also Wash & Finish Drip Dry Curtains Professionally WE DO ALL THE WORK REMOVE AND INSTALL 891-1818 Suburban Cal; Coll:, Reverse Charges Trade Member American Society of Interior Designers (A.S.I.D.) forms of racial discrimina- tion" mentioned in resolu- tions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. This obviously included the Assembly's resolution of last November defining Zionism as a form of rac- ism. But Molly Boucher, vice- president of the Board of Canadian Catholic Organi- zations for Development and Peace, who was a mem- ber of the Vatican delega- tion at the "Habitat" confer- ence, told newsmen, "We did not agree with the inter- pretation that some place on that paragraph. It could be construed as being anti- Zionist or anti-Jewish but was not specifically so." Therefore, she said, the Holy See did not consider it was anti-Jewish by support- ing the Declaration. wrote to Kenneth H. Mac- Queen, vice president and general manager of WABC-TV requesting that "equal time should 'be given to provide your viewers with an opportu- nity to hear from responsi- ble black leaders and spokesmen." PLACE announces Saturday According to transcripts of the interview, Carmi- chael, who chairman of the All African People's Revolutionary Party, said "It is totally improper that the (U.S.) government should continue to send our tax dollars to Israel" and that "Zionists remain the primary supporters of the repressive South African regime and unjustly occupy land belonging to Egypt." At the same time, they believe such expres- sions should be confined to the Jewish community lest they "give aid and comfort" to Israel's enemies. That consensus was re- ported by Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, chairman of the Conference of Presi- dents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Rabbi Schindler disclosed at a press conference at Jewish Agency headquart- ers in New York that the Presidents Conference held a meeting with more than 100 representatives of Jew- ish groups, including "hawks" and "doves," in an effort to ascertain the atti- tude within the American Jewish community with re- spect to Israel's policies. According to Rabbi Schindler, "The over- whelming opinion of the more than 100.representa- fives who attended was to support free expression of the widest variety of views and opinions on Israel's policies — provided that such views were voiced within the Jewish commu- nity." Rabbi Schindler said, however, that "the near unanimous" opinion at the meeting was that when Jew- ish dissent is made public in the daily press or in the halls of government, the re- sult is "to give aid and com- fort to the enemy and to weaken that Jewish unity which is essential for the se- curity of Israel and, indeed, of the Jewish community in America."
