Justice Meir Shamgar ruled that the matter was not one in which the court could intervene since it was not qualified to say what was or was not a reasonable and acceptable way for the army to ap- proach a military problem. Nazi Camp Burned BONN — Police believe the destruction of the for- mer German concentration camp at Struthof in Alsace was an act of arson. Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA SOVIET ECHOES: Two books — one on Stalin and the other on Trotsky — have just appeared in this country written by the same author. The author is Joel Carmichael, an acknowledged expert on old and modern Russia whose "Illustrated History of Russia" is considered a classic. Both volumes constitute profound studies of the char- acters of each of the two Communist leaders. They are also part of the background which led to inner quarrels within the Communist leadership ranks in the USSR and to the exile and subsequent assassination of Trotsky in Mexico by a Stalin agent. The book on Stalin — entitled "Stalin's Masterpiece" — is an analytical exposure of Stalin's satanic manipulations to eliminate, and later exterminate, all Old Bolsheviks after Lenin's death, in order to become the sole ruler of the Com- munist Party and the dictator of the Soviet Union. Carmichael's book presents a picture of Stalin showing him as the greatest monster of modern times, equaled only by Hitler in inhumanity. STALIN'S ANTI-SEMITISM: In the course of bring- ing out Stalin's true character, Carmichael also touches upon his anti-Jewish feelings which he camouflaged care- fully but which he indicated in his "inner circle" in various ways. He has shown them by particularly enjoying anti- Jewish jokes. Stalin's ferocity had increased after his pact with Hit- ler in 1939. It found its expression at the end of the war in the dissolution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in Moscow, in closing down all Jewish institutions and in the mass murder of all Jewish writers, artists and other intel- lectual — including the most ardent Communists among them. The culmination point of Stalin's brutal strategy against all elements in Soviet Jewry was . his staging in 1953 and so-called "Doctors' Plot" in which prominent Jew- ish physicians working in the Kremlin were charged with planning to poison Stalin. The "plot" launched a flood of dentfficiations, arrests and demotions of Jews all over the Soviet Union. A large number of ordinary Jews were im- prisoned or sent to concentration camps. This was accompa- nied by a torrent of propaganda demonstrating that Jews were by nature traitors and spies for imperialist countries. The Jews all over the USSR were living in mortal fear while the trial of the accused doctors was in preparation. It was indicated that, under Stalin's orders, the verdict in the trial was to serve as a signal to start mass-pogroms of Jews with eventual deportations of all the Jews — their passports had been marked with the Word "Jew" several years earlier — to distant labor camps in Siberia under the pretext of "rescuing" them from the "infuriated mobs" in the places where they lived. Stalin did not live to hear the verdict. He died sud- denly of a stroke just a day prior to the issuance of the verdict in March 1953. The "plot" was thereupon officially denounced as a fabrication and all prisoners were released. The Jews in the Soviet Union breathed freely, but not for long. Anti-Jewish propaganda was resumed when the Kremlin decided to break off relations with Israel and pro- vide the Arabs with arms and instructors to fight Israel. The anti-Jewish propaganda was resumed when the Krem- lin decided to break off relations with Israel and provide the Arabs with arms and instructors to fight Israel. The anti- Jewish policy in the Kremlin served also as aline of guid- ance to Soviet satellite countries, especially Poland, Czecho- slovakia and Hungary. TROTSKY'S "JEWISHNESS": Carmichael's excel- lent book on Stalin will remain indispensable reading for all times for students of Soviet history, especially of the period of the "purges." In this connection it is regrettable that "Stalin's Masterpiece" contains nothing about the liquida- tion by Stalin of the entire Jewish cultural life which had flowered in the Soviet Union in the early years of the Revo- lution, and that nothing is mentioned about the deliberate mass killing of the entire Jewish intelligentsia. It is also regrettable that the book, published by St. Martin's Press, Inc., does not list in the its index the sub- jects "Anti-Semitism" and "Jews" although the author has written quite extensively on these subjects in his book. This "ommission" has not been made, however, in the index of Carmichael's second book, "Trotsky," published by the same firm. In his "Trotsky" book, written with great insight and depth, Carmichael emphasizes that Trotsky hated to be reminded of his Jewishness. He brings out a picture of him as a co-founder with Lenin of the Soviet state, a man of great ability, a writer, organizer and orator who felt ham- strung by an inner embarrassment about his Jewish origin. Mrs. Zellman, Edited Seniors' Publication Grace Zellman, adviser to "The Writer's Corner," the creative writing publication of the Jewish Community Center's senior adult pro- gram, died June 13 at age 78. Mrs. Zellman was a mem- ber of Cong. Beth Achim. Her work was recalled this week by Gertrude Ober- stein, who stated in part in a letter to The Jewish News: "I am moved to share with you an incident which really launched the Writers Journal . . . "It was a weekly meeting of elderly men and women who came together to pass some time and enjoy the weekly cup of coffee and cake. That seemed to be the highlight of the afternoon. Grace Zellman, 'Lady Grace' as she was called, mothered the group, and they adored her. But that afternoon as she saw them Dems Nix Ballots From Israel JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The Democratic National Committee has disqualified on "technical grounds" all 651 ballots cast by Ameri- can citizens living in Israel for delegates to the Demo- cratic nominating conven- tion which opens in New York next month. The ballots were voided because the 39 candidates for delegate were not each provided with a list of all registered American voters in Israel, according to a ca- ble received by the National Committee representatives in Israel. Another reason given was that delegates known to favor "pro-Israel" candidates had received rec- ommendations on National Committee letterheads. d'Estaing Meets Israeli Diplomat PARIS (JTA) — Presi- dent Valery Giscard d'Es- taing met here last week with Israeli Ambassador Mordechai Gazit for a gen- eral review of Franco-Israeli relations and the Middle East situation. Diplomatic sources here described the meeting as "very cordial." The French President apparently wanted to "feel out" Israel before his talks with the Syrian President Thursday. Hostel Designed for Single Olim NEW YORK — A new hostel designed specifically for young single immi- grants was dedicated in the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon, last month according to the Israel Aliyah Center. The new hostel provides for temporary accomoda- tions for young single immi- grants mainly from West- ern countries. Until now young single immigrants found it difficult to find temporary housing since most of the absorption cen- ters and hostels were built for married couples and families with children. slouched over in their seats, half asleep, half awake, she said, 'Why have you come here? Just to pass the time? You all have a past. You all have memories. Don't just talk about them. Write them down. Share them with each other. Let's begin now. Let's put our lives down in a book.'
