picture producer-director
Max Baer, son of the flam-
boyant prize-fight cham-
pion of the 1930s, for nine
years portraying a key role
in the television series, "The
Beverly Hillbillies," moved
into the feature film field
two years ago with "Macon
County Line," co-written by
Baer who also produced and
portrayed the starring part.
The younger Max Baer
now graduated from the
$250,000 budget of his first

Solomon Loses
Tennis Match

PARIS — Harold Solo-
mon failed in his bid to be-
come the first American in
21 years to win the singles
tennis championship in the
French Open last Sunday
when he lost to Italy's Adri-
ano Panatta in the finals
three sets to one.
Solomon, of Silver Spring,
Md., won his semi-final
match the day before in 126
.degree heat. He was the
first American to play for
the French Open champion-
ship since 1957.

ture, "Ode to Billy Joe,"
which he is currently pro-
ducing and directing in Tal-
lahatchie County, Miss. The
new story is inspired by the
love ballad of "Ode to Billy
Joe," written and sung by
Bobbie Genty.
Herman Raucher, author
of the movie, "Summer of
'42," has written the screen
treatment and scenario ar-
ound the ballad, with Robby
Benson and Glynnis O'-
Connor portraying the ro-
mantic couple.
Neil Simon's original
screenplay, "Goodbye
Girl," will be filmed
jointly by Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer and Warner Bros.
by the team of producer
Ray • Stark and director
Heibert Ross who success-
fully completed the motion
picture version of Simon's
"The Sunshine Boys,"
starring Walter Matthau
and George Burns with
Richard Benjamin at their
side.
At the Cannes film festi-
val, the Israel delegation
closed their official booth in
protest over the showing of
the Swiss film, "Schatten
der Engel" (Shadows of the
Angels), by Daniel Schmidt,
which was labeled outspo-
kenly anti-Semitic.
Israeli film commission-
ers Zohar Beram requested
a special screening but the
picture was shipped back to
Switzerland before judg-
ment could be passed. A
similar problem arose at the
Academy screening of the
Polish-made film, "Land of
Promise" earlier this year.
