LAS VEGAS, NEV . . .
People may not realize it,
but more so than in any
other sport in the world . . .
teamwork is the most pre-
dominant factor in running
a hotel here such as the
MGM Grand.
Everything about Las
Vegas is sport . . . it's the
entertainment capital of the
world in varied phases of ac-
tivity . . . The MGM team-
work centers about people
like Al Benedict, president;
Bernie Rothkopf, executive
vice president; Morrie Jae-
ger, vice president and cas-
ino manager . . . plus em-
ployes like Aftie Jaeger,
shift boss; Stu Segal, floor
manager; Charlie Reznick,
collections; Hilliard Kelley,
poker dealer and Jimmy
Spades, "21" dealer . . . The
latter four are all former
Detroiters.
Morrie Jaeger belies his
42 years of age . . . He is a
handsome, slender-built
gent who walks four miles
every morning . . . and is
known as "Mr. Nice Guy" by
the thousands of employes
at MGM, most of whom he
knows by their first names
. . . To many he is like the
unofficial chaplain at MGM
Grand . . . They come to
him with their troubles . . .
and some he is able to help
straighten out.
Morrie isn't a "Johnny
Come Lately" by any
means . . . Before MGM
Grand was born, he had
worked a year on its plans
. . . every Wednesday
doughnut time at the con-
struction shack . . . with
Morrie buying . . . and
guys like Sid Hudson look-
ing forward to the "event"
by coming over for coffee
and.
Previously, Morrie had
been one of the owners at
Caesar's Palace . . . 12
years in charge of the "21"
games at the Stardust . . .
and prior to this at Beverly
Hills Country Club in Cov-
ington, Ky. when Jerry
Lewis and Dean Martin
were still partners.

Caesar's Palace . . . 12
years in charge of the "21"
games at the Stardust . . .
and prior to this at Beverly
Hills Country Club in Cov-
ington, Ky. when Jerry
Lewis and Dean Martin
were still partners.
Today, Morrie and wife
Helen have a ranch in Las
Vegas . . . and their son,
Mitel, is a quarterback at
Colorad -.; St t^ . . . Gne
time, there was a problem
to be solved at the MGM and
he came in from his ranch
. . . Many people who
worked there didn't recog-
nize Morrie . . . he wasn't
the dapper gentleman in
shirt, tie and tailored suit
they had grown to know.
In keeping with his
rancher theme, Morrie's of-
fice at MGM has been mod-
eled into a western motif,

with knotty pine paneling,
horse collar and cow horns
on walls, entrance and exit
door built to look like a
barndoor . . . and a sign
that says, "Morrie Jaeger,
Trail Boss" . . . To complete
the decor, even the restroom
foor of his office has a
quarter moon out-house
symbol on it.
He is one of more than
4,000 members of Temple
Beth Shalom, Las Vegas'
conservative synagogue
. . . Morrie was recently
best man at the wedding of
actor Jimmy Caan, who
broke the glass in true
Yiddish tradition.
The MGM Grand Hotel,
opened in 1973, is a stagger-
ingly mammoth 26-story
complex with 2,100 rooms
and two-and-a-half million
square feet.
The Restaurant Court at
MGM is a movie studio re-
creation of an old world
scene, featuring restaurants
serving everything from
pate de foie gras to hot pas-
trami . . . Cafe Gigi has
haute cuisine served in the
grand manner in a setting
reminiscent of the Palace of
Versailles . . . The huge
entrance door, ornate gold
detailed wall panels and
-mirrors are from the actual
set of the movie, "Marie
Antoinette" . .. Caruso's
features Italian specialties
in an atmosphere of Vene-
tian elegance . . . Barry-
more's offers seafood and
steak plus other desired
items . . . The Deli is a so-
phisticated version of a
Broadway delicatessen,
with caricatures of MGM
stars lining the walls . . .
Orleans Coffee Shop is a col-
orful French Quarter cafe
with varied menu.
When guests arrive at the
MGM Grand, they find it
hard to believe that the
world's largest resort was
built in just under 18
months . . . Ground-break-
ing was April 15, 1972 . . .
opening, Dec. 5, 1973.
But as mammoth and
extravagant as the MGM
Grand in Las Vegas is . . .
another huge edifice even
larger is expected to be
opened in Reno . . . with
date targeted for sometime
in 1978 . . . It will have
bowling lanes, a lake, etc.
. . . and name will be
MGM Grand Reno.
For the fifth time, we saw
the super colossal extrava-
ganza, "Hallelujah Holly-
wood" in the Ziegfield Room
. . . and for the fifth time,
we sat spellbound at the
aural mosaic, with brightly
colored bits of sights and
sounds woven together in
hypnotic textures . . . It is a
sparkling, exploding, per-
petual-motion performance
complete with beautiful
girls, dazzling scenery, fab-
ulous production numbers,
specialty acts, animals,
special effects, etc. . . . in-
cluding much nostalgia.
