It is most 'appropriate, therefore, that the Dover-published "Thirty-Two Picture Post- cards of Old New York" should include two of Tem- ple Emanu-El. Also included in these postcards is one of Hester Street, once a focal point in New York's East Side that was a JeWish section of note. Regrettably, this collec- tion, in the Dover publica- tion is limited. It should and could have included many points of Jewish interest. In its present form it neverthe- less fulfills an important function as a collection of mementos of Old New York, each easily clipped and ready for mailing. Israel Offers Gush Emunim Alternate Settlement Site JERUSALEM (JTA) — The government began ne- gotiations with the Gush Emunim last week over an alternative settlement site for the 150 squatters now encamped at Kadum in Sa- maria. The Gush insist on remaining in "the heart of Samaria." The government is ex- pected to offer them settle- ment opportunities on the eastern ridge of the Samar- ian highlands overlooking the Jordan Valley or on the extreme western edge close to the pre-June, 1967 lines. This would be in accordance with the so-called Allon Plan for the West Bank which, though never for- mally adopted by the Cabi- net, has constituted a guide for the government's settle- ment policies. The cabinet decided on May 9 that the Gush squat- ters must leave Kadum. If they reject an alternate set- tlement site, they will be re- moved by force if necessary according to the decision. Meanwhile, the La Am movement, a faction within Likud, held a meeting at Kadum in Samaria in a demonstration of support for the Gush Emunim.
