JERUSALEM The an-
nouncement of Prof. Yigal
Yadin that he will enter Is-
raeli politics has created a
sensation in Israel. Prof.
Yadin, former chief of staff
of the Israeli army, has de-
voted the last 25 years to
scholarship, as one of the
most famous archaelogists
in Israel.
His appearance on Israeli
TV was welcomed by cer-
tain political groups in Is-
rael, but not by the Labor
Alignment and Likud.
A Likud leader hinted
that Prof. Yadin has had
political talks with one of
them, but Yadin denied this.
Likud(was dissatisfied with
his declarations about the
future of the West Bank.

ment claimed that his pol-
itical views were similar
to theirs, and asked why
another party is neces-
sary.
Some argued Yadin
tried to appear as a Mes-
siah who wishes to save Is-
rael and strengthen the
morale of the people. Some
called him the "Israeli De
Gaulle!"
Yadin is very popular in
Israel among intellectuals
and former soldiers, and he
could gain quite a few votes.
Names of personalities
who are ready to back Prof.
Yadin appeared in the Is-
raeli press: the former chief
of staff of the Israeli army
Chaim Laskow; the general
manager of the industrial
Histadrut enterprise
"Koor," Reserve-General
Meir Amit, member of
Knesset Aharon Yariv (the
former commander of the
Security Service of the Is-
raeli army and minister of
information); the former
rector of Jerusalem Univer-
sity, Prof. Rosenstreich; and
others.

YIGAL YADIN

Those names created a
certain anxiety in the Labor
Alignment and Likud. Pre-
mier Yitzhak Rabin wel-
comed the initiative of Prof.
Yadin to enter political life,
but repeated that Yadin's
platform resembles the La-
bor Alignment's.
Yadin criticized those
who predicted that he in-
tended to form a govern-
ment of former generals.

HUC-JIR Raps
Non-Acceptance

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Board of Governors of He-
brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion has
denounced the denial of a
seat on the Jerusalem Reli-
gious Council to Rabbi
Moses C. Weiler as "a trav-
esty as well as an affront to
the Reform and Progressive
movements in Judaism."
Rabbi Weiler was denied
the seat because of his
membership in the Move-
ment of Progressive Juda-
ism.

Jewish Candidate
Seeks Connecticut
Senate Position_

NEW YORK — Connecti-
cut's Democratic Senatorial
candidate Gloria Schaffer,
the state's current secretary
of state, finds that being a
woman and Jewish are not
hindrances to her campaign.
Acdording to the June is-
sue of American Home
magazine, Ms. Schaffer
said, "I don't see these
things as a stumbling block.
Anyone who uses this argu-
ment will find it's going to
backfire."

and efficient members of
the Cabinet, but they have
no influence on the popula-
tion and can hardly change
the atmosphere in the coun-
try. Yadin said he had not
yet decided to take part in
the next elections. This de-
pends on the reaction of the
population to his political
program.
It is possible that the
leaders of the Labor Party
will send emissaries to Yigal
Yadin and offer him an hon-
orary place in the party list.
They will also warn former
military leaders and manag-
ers of big enterprises not to
join Yadin's party. The lead-
ers of the Labor Party corn-
fort themselves that once
David Ben-Gurion went
with his Rafi group in a sep-

arate list to Knesset elec-
tions. He obtained 10 seats,
but it hardly changed the
political situation in the
country.
