cle that summarized the
Nazi Holocaust.
Writer Catherine Haven
wrote about Father Frank
Tyminsk4 who retired May
31 from the active ministry.
Fr. Tyminski, as a Polish
priest, was incarcerated in
Sachsenhausen in 1940, and
was a prisoner at Dachau
from 1941-45. Of 2,200 Pol-
ish priests at Dachau, he
was one of 860 who survived.
Fr. Tyminski tells of dis-
crimination against the Pol-
ish priests by the Nazis and
other prisoner clergy, and
how he narrowly avoided
medical experiments be-
cause his health was not
perfect.
Eight priests from Da-
chau came to the Detroit
area after the war, and
each year they join others
in the U.S. and Canada for
an annual mass and reu-
nion.
In her summary of the
Holocaust, Catherine Haven
both criticized and praised
the Church for its role:
"German Church leaders,
in the meantime, main-
tained a policy of silence
toward the Nazi atrocities.
"While German Catholi-
cism clashed frequently
with National Socialism
both before and after Hit-
ler's advent to power, noted
Nora Levin in 'The Holo-
caust', anti-Semitism was
not a major issue of conflict.

mined by the course Labor
charts at its own convention
in December. Mapam will
reconvene afterwards to de-
cide the Alignment's future.
The three-day convention
here closed with the adop-
tion of a series of resolu-
tions that were tantamount
to a warning to the Labor
Party that the Alignment
could founder if no common
denominator is found be-
tween its constituents.
A resolution calling for
an immediate break with
Labor was not brought to a
vote during the conven-
tion.
The resolutions adopted
included a demand that the
government prepare an
overall peace plan that
would ensure Israel's secu-
rity while not adding any
territories. Israel was urged
to announce its willingness
to carry out large scale
withdrawals from the Sinai,
West Bank and Golan
Heights. The evacuated area
on the Heights should be
permanently demilitarized,
Mapam said.
Freedom of navigation on
the Red Sea should be as-
sured by some form of Is-
raeli presence at Sharm el-
Sheikh. Mapam would not
return the Gaza Strip to
Egyptian control but would
determine its future status
by Israel's security needs
and the wishes of the local
population.
Mapam proposed that
negotiations be conducted
with Jordan on the assump-
tion ,that-two, sovereign in-
dependent states — Israel
and a Palestinian Arab ent-

ity — will exist once the Pa-
lestinians have made their
political choice. Mapam
stated that the development
of Jerusalem and its sub-
urbs was of primary im-
portance to Israel. It ex-
pressed total opposition to
the illegal settlement at-
tempts by the Gush Emu-
nim.

Dump Begin Drive
Started by Likud

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
movement appears to be
developing within Likud for
the retirement of its veteran
leader Menachem Begin.
Begin, who heads the par-
ty's Herut faction, has been
asked, in several articles
and pamphlets published
recently, to step down so
that others may become
spokesmen for the non-La-
bor opposition.
These suggestions are
emanating from personali-
ties in the Liberal and Free
Center factions of the Liku
coalition. Prior to the estaL
lishment of Likud after the
Yom Kippur War, the Lib-
erals and Herut comprised
the Gahal alignment which
was in opposition to the
Labor Alignment.
